Place Values Whole #’s Decimals 

Rounding a Whole Number Round to the nearest hundred 7,862 First, find the digit in the hundreds place Next, read the digit to the right. Remember: 5 or more, round up. Less than 5, round down Since 6 is greater than 5, we round up 7,862 7,862 7,900

Rounding a Decimal Round 0.637 to the nearest tenth 0.637 0.6 One again, begin by locating the “tenth” place 0.637 Since 3 is less than 5, we round down!!! 0.6

Rounding to the Nearest CENT Rounding to the nearest cent means rounding to the hundredth place. Ex: Round $1.32589 to the nearest cent =$1.33

Rounding Round 5,693.251 to…. Thousands Hundreds Tenths Ones  6,000  5,700  5,693.3  5,693

Working with CA$H Dollar and cents amounts are often rounded to the nearest cent, or hundredths place. Example: $3.289 ≈ $3.29 TRY! $21.277 $967.461 $138.7836

Tenth of a Cent Sometimes it’s necessary to round to the nearest tenth of a cent Step 1: Convert from dollars to cents by multiplying by 100 (or moving your decimal two places to the right!) Ex: $0.5894 x 100 = 58.94 ¢ Round to nearest tenth of a cent 58.94 ¢ = 58.9 ¢

Tenth of a Cent Round the answers to the nearest tenth of a cent $7÷16 $2.50÷18

Percent to Decimal To convert percent to decimal, either divide by 100 or just move your decimal point two places to the left 37.5% 9%

Decimal to Percent To convert percent to decimal, either multiply by 100 or just move the decimal two places to the right Example: 0.42 = 42% .005 = .5% or 0.5%

Conversions Convert 09% into a decimal Convert .025 into a percent

Calculating the Mean The “mean” is a single number that is used to represent a group of numbers The arithmetic mean is a way of calculated the “average” of a group of numbers Suppose we have n numbers in a group. We would find the mean by dividing the sum of all of the numbers by n

Calculating the Mean Example: find the mean of the following group of numbers: 10, 4, 7, 8, 6 Mean = NOTE: We are dividing by 5 because there are five numbers in the group
