Road to Rounding

Road to Rounding Mrs. Biehunko and her family are driving to a baseball game. They realize that they are about to run out of gas. Her husband has to walk to the nearest gas station. They pull out a map, but argue over which gas station is closest to where they are.   Which is closer?

QUESTIONS How did you decide which station to walk to?   Why was this station better? Is there a math rule that could describe your reasoning?

210,9 5 3 5 or more raise the score 4 or less let it rest ROUNDING RULE 5 or more raise the score 4 or less let it rest Underline the place you are rounding to and circle the number to the right 210,9 5 3

210,953 Round to the nearest 10: ________________ Use the underline and circle strategy for each Round to the nearest 10: ________________ Round to the nearest 100: ________________ Round to the nearest 1000: ________________ Round to the nearest 100,000: ________________

After walking to the gas station, Mr. Biehunko is hungry After walking to the gas station, Mr. Biehunko is hungry! He picks out a Dr. Pepper which cost $1.60, some beef jerky at $3.75, and a Hershey candy bar for $0.99. Cheetos are on sale for $0.75. The Biehunkos only have $10.00. How much change will they receive back?

QUESTIONS How would I solve this problem?   How would I solve this problem?   Is there any extra information that could confuse us? Which operation can I use to solve this problem? Do the Biehunkos have enough money to buy all of the food?

Mr. Biehunko is still hungry!!! He wants Chick-Fil-A! https://chick-fil-a.alohaorderonline.com/OrderEntry.aspx)   In groups of 3, plan a meal for your group. You must spend less than $30.00. Make sure each group member has a complete meal and drink. Calculate how much change you will receive. Place each group member’s meal cost in order from least to greatest. ** see next slide for menu

QUESTIONS Who spent the most? Who spent the least? How did you calculate the total your group spent? How did you calculate the amount of change received? If I joined your group, would there be enough money to buy me a full meal?

ROUNDING GAME Each group will need a decahedra die (ten-sided die numbered 0 – 9) and a journal. Each student will take turns rolling the die 4 times to construct a 4-digit number (arrange the digits in any order) Instruct students to round each number to the nearest ten, hundred, and thousand as indicated on the recording sheet, verify the rounding of their partner’s number, and then find the sum of their number and their partner’s number. Remind students to check each other’s work to determine if each number has been rounded and added correctly.
