Distributive Property and Removing Parentheses Lesson 2.1

Objectives for the day… Use the Distributive Property to expand and combine like terms Use and apply the distributive property to perform calculations in your head Apply the distributive property in real-world situations

Definitions Distributive Property of Multiplication over Addition: c ( a + b) = ca + cb Distributive Property of Multiplication over Subtraction: C ( a – b) = ca - cb

Lesson Master # 1 : 5 ( 2x + 6) #5: 5 (.2x2 - .4x + .3) # 7: Show how the Distributive Property can be used to perform in your head 17 ∙ 5 #8: You want to tip the pizza delivery person 10% of the cost of your pizza. The pizza cost $13.65 plus $1.50 per topping for n toppings. How much is the tip?

Lesson Master (continued) Express the area of the largest rectangle at the right as: Length times width: The sum of areas of the smaller rectangles y ( x + 2) xy + 2y

One more! Use the distributive property to write as the sum of two fractions:

Partner work (to be handed in): Suppose a farmer rents three farms on which she plants corn and soybeans. One farm consists of u acres of land, the second farm consists of v acres of land, and the third farm consists of w acres of land. She plants corn on the first two farms and harvests 184 bushels of corn per acre. She will earn $3.30 per bushel. The farmer plants soybeans on the third farm and harvests 54 bushels per acre and earns $6.42 per bushel. Explain how you would find how much she will earn.
