Vocabulary Addends- The numbers used to get a sum or total. (addition equation) Decimal - Part of a whole, represented by base ten and decimal notation. Difference- The answer to a subtraction equation. (always positive) Dividend- The number being divided in a division equation. (the first number) Divisor - The number doing the dividing. ( the second number) Equivalent- Equal or the same. Estimate- A reasonable guess made by rounding to compatible numbers. Factors- The numbers being multiplied in a multiplication equation. Product- The answer to a multiplication equation. Quotient- The answer to a division equation. Round-off Error- The difference between an estimate and accurate calculation. Sum- The answer to an addition equation.
Place Value
Multiplying Decimals by Powers of 10 Essential Understanding: Multiplying decimals to the power of ten is very similar to multiplying whole numbers by the power of ten. To multiply a decimal by a power of 10 greater than 1, move the decimal to the right one place for every zero in the power of 10. Example: 1.8565 x 100 = 185.65 To multiply a decimal by a power of 10 that is between 0 and 1, move the decimal to the left one place for every decimal place in the power of 10. Example: 34.5 x 0.001 = 0.0345 **Remember- When in doubt, Work it out!**
Dividing Decimals by Powers of 10 Essential Understanding: To divide a decimal by a power of 10 greater than 1, move the decimal the left one place for every zero in the power of ten. Example: 421.2 ÷ 10 = 42.12 To divide a decimal by a power of 10 that is between 0 and 1, move the decimal the right one place for every decimal place in the power of 10. Example: 3.172 ÷ 0.01 = 317.2 **Remember- When in doubt, Work it out!**

Adding and Subtracting Decimals Essential Understanding: To add and subtract decimals, Begin by writing the equation vertically, be sure to line the decimals up. Order is important when subtracting. (think what is being taken away from what?) When adding order does not matter. (think commutative property) Once you have your numbers in order and your decimals lined up, you can add zeros in front of any whole number or to the end of any decimal as needed. Next, add or subtract as you would with whole numbers. Don’t forget to borrow or carry as necessary. Finally, bring the decimal straight down into the sum or difference. Examples:

Multiplying Decimals Essential Understanding: Multiplying decimals is very similar to multiplying whole numbers: Begin by writing the equation vertically. The number with the most digits should be placed on top. Then, use the basic rules of multiplication to multiply every number on bottom by every number on top. Moving from the ones place to the tens place, and so on. Remember to drop down a line with every new digit, and don’t forget your place holders. Next, find the sum of all lines in the product, carrying as needed. Finally, to determine the position of the decimal in the product, count the number of decimals places in each factor. Example: 1 .5 There are two decimal places in the factors. x .5 .75 So, there will be two decimal places in the product. More Examples:

Menu Madness For this activity your group will need: An Apron A Ticket Book A Menu Play Money ($100.00) To Play: You will take turns acting as a waitress/waiter for your group. The rest of your group will be the customers. First, the customers will need to look over the menu and decided what to order. Next, the server will write down everyone’s order and add up their total. Once the bill is calculated, the customers will need to check their bill for accuracy, and determine the correct change. When the customers have reach an agreement, one person will bring the bill and money to the cashier (Mrs. E). If the cashier agrees, you will return to your group and swap roles until everyone has had a turn to act as the server.
