Postmodern Art Pepon Osorio Valentina Jerez
Biography Born in San Juan, Puerto Rico: 1955 Present He moved in 1975 to New York to finish his education. He finished a Master degree in sociology He got a job as Social worker which exposed him to new experience, new people, and new environment. He connect his artwork with the experiences and stories from his past that are significant in his life. His childhood is one of his biggest inspiration. His mother was a baker (different celebrations and events). He engaged with the communities of Williamstown and North Adams, Mass.(lots of his ideas came from those two towns).
Art work Most of Pepon's work were made of chucherias that he got from neighbours. Chucherias(candeliers) : something old that people do not use. pepon consider chucherias as symbols of dreams, hopes, humour, and hardship of Puerto Ricans living in a barrio. The chandelier’s also recalls the decorated cakes his mother made during his childhood. Weddings, parties, religious devotions. By layering the objects it changes their meaning and challenges notions of art. Large scale installations
Media and subject matter His art pieces included videos, objects, and detailed installations that evoke familiar spaces such as barbershops, offices, and homes. The subject matter Pepon use in his work is real-life narratives of the different communities he engages. Conflicts
Chucherias All of his work are made of chucherias that are found in neighbours houses, stores, etc.

Drowned in a glass of water(2010) Re- creates the home of a family Pepon Osorio interacted with in Western Massachusetts, exploting issues of economics, cultural identity, and family struggles. This piece installation refers to that stifling feeling one has when life’s obstacles seem insurmountable. the emotional tone suggests struggle and recovery. No enough information of how Osorio came up with the story.
