Ten Steps to Take Now to Prepare for College and Beyond

Take the most challenging courses! Take the most challenging courses you can handle. Select electives to develop and advance your interests.

Pursue the Five Core Subjects English Math Social Studies Science Foreign Language Note: In most cases, five is better than four, four is better than three, etc.

Pursue Honors, Dual Enrollment, & Advanced Placement Courses AP, honors, and dual enrollment courses allow even more challenge and may provide college credit. Honors, DE, and AP courses offer weighted credit and can help build a solid GPA.

Prepare For Standardized Tests Participate in self-study and preparation classes on test taking skills. Standardized Test to be taken during High School: PSAT SAT ACT AP EXAMS SOLs College Board and Khan Academy can help prepare for SAT testing.

Develop Your Extra Strengths! Extracurricular activities will enhance your profile. Develop your skills through involvement in 2-4 activities during high school. Give back to your school community and local community.

LEADERSHIP - Is Essential Demonstrate leadership in what you do, and participate in something in which you can excel. Concentrate on what is meaningful to you and remember that colleges and employers look for longer commitment to a few activities rather than a list of one year activities.

GIVE BACK TO THE COMMUNITY! Give back to the community of the school and the broader community. *Remember, whatever you do well and enjoy can provide the opportunity to share yourself with the community.

Keep Your Options Open and Your Mind Ready! Form close relationships with your counselors, and career counselor, and be open to exploring a variety of post-secondary academic institutions. Avoid becoming focused too early on any one college.
