Jesus the Prophet, Priest, and King The Book of Hebrews presents Jesus as the Son of God, the Great King. He is the Son who is: Better than the prophets, Hebrews 1:1-3. Better than the angels, Hebrews 1:4-14. Better than Moses the servant, Hebrews 3:1-6.

Introductory Text Hebrews 5:1-3 1, “For every high priest taken from among men is ordained for men in things pertaining to God, that he may offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins:” 2, “Who can have compassion on the ignorant, and on them that are out of the way; for that he himself also is compassed with infirmity.” 3, “And by reason hereof he ought, as for the people, so also for himself, to offer for sins.”

Introductory Text Hebrews 5:4-6 4, And no man taketh this honour unto himself, but he that is called of God, as was Aaron.” 5, ”So also Christ glorified not himself to be made an high priest; but he that said unto him, Thou art my Son, to day have I begotten thee.” [Psalm 2:7] 6, “As he saith also in another place, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.” [Psalm 110:4]

The Priesthood of Aaron The priesthood of Aaron was an elaborate, ceremonial, and ritualistic order. The Jews had never heard of any priesthood after the order of Melchisidec. They only knew the priesthood of Aaron.

The Priesthood of Aaron (1) The High Priest and the Priests (Types of Christ and Believers in the Church Age), Exodus 28:1-3 (2) The Garments of the High Priest, Exodus 28:4-43 The Materials, Exodus 28:5 The Ephod, Exodus 28:6-14 The Breastplate, Exodus 28:15-29 The Urim and Thummim, Exodus 28:30- The Robe of the Ephod, Exodus 28:31-35 The Holy Crown, Exodus 28:36-38; 29:6 The Ordinary Garments of the Priests, Exodus 28:39-43

Melchisidec A Type of Christ Melchisedec was a type of Christ in that He received tithe from Abraham. Hebrews 7:1-3 1, “For this Melchisedec, king of Salem, priest of the most high God, who met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings, and blessed him;” 2, “To whom also Abraham gave a tenth part of all; first being by interpretation King of righteousness, and after that also King of Salem, which is, King of peace;” 3, “Without father, without mother, without descent, having neither beginning of days, nor end of life; but made like unto the Son of God; abideth a priest continually.”

Melchisidec Greater Than Aaron The high priesthood of Melchisedec is greater than that of Aaron, greater in authority and glory. Hebrews 7:4-6 4, “Now consider how great this man was, unto whom even the patriarch Abraham gave the tenth of the spoils.” 5, “And verily they that are of the sons of Levi, who receive the office of the priesthood, have a commandment to take tithes of the people according to the law, that is, of their brethren, though they come out of the loins of Abraham:” 6, “But he whose descent is not counted from them received tithes of Abraham, and blessed him that had the promises.”

Melchisidec Greater Than Aaron Hebrews 7:7-9 7, “And without all contradiction the less is blessed of the better.” 8, “And here men that die receive tithes; but there he receiveth them, of whom it is witnessed that he liveth.” 9, “And as I may so say, Levi also, who receiveth tithes, payed tithes in Abraham.”

Compare The Aaronic Priesthood The Aaronic priesthood made nothing perfect. The Aaronic priests died. Jesus never dies, but lives forever. The Aaronic priests descended from Aaron, but Jesus descended from David. The Aaronic priests had an earthly tabernacle, but Jesus has a heavenly tabernacle.  Hebrews 8:1-2 1, “Now of the things which we have spoken this is the sum: We have such an high priest, who is set on the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens;” 2, “A minister of the sanctuary, and of the true tabernacle, which the Lord pitched, and not man.”

Compare the Aaronic Priesthood The Aaronic priesthood had only a temporal covenant of laws written on stone, but Jesus brought an eternal covenant written on men’s hearts. Hebrews 8:7, “For if that first covenant had been faultless, then should no place have been sought for the second.” Heb 8:10, “For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people:”

Foreshadows of Christ The tabernacle, the priesthood, and the sacrifices all foreshadowed the ministry of Christ. Hebrews 9:9-10 9, “Which was a figure for the time then present, in which were offered both gifts and sacrifices, that could not make him that did the service perfect, as pertaining to the conscience;” 10, “Which stood only in meats and drinks, and divers washings, and carnal ordinances, imposed on them until the time of reformation.”

We Can Come Boldly Because we have a greater covenant, Because we have a greater tabernacle, Because we have a greater sacrifice, Because we have a Greater High Priest, We can come boldly into the holy of holies.

Enter the Holy of Holies Hebrews 10:19-21 19, “Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus,” 20, “By a new and living way, which he hath consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh;” 21, “And having an high priest over the house of God;”

Enter the Holy of Holies Hebrews 10:22-25 22, “Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water.” 23, “Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised;)” 24, “And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works:” 25, “Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.”
