My Practicum Classroom

My Blueprint of My Practicum Classroom *Each green dot represents a student’s chair.

Steele’s Six Functions

Safety and Security There is a large piece of orange paper that covers the window that is visible to the hallway. Not only does it prevent students from distractions, but it blocks the view of intruders in the event of a potential emergency.

Social Contact Groups of either 2 or 3 students sit at these trapezoid-shaped tables usually with someone of a different gender, racial background, or ability level. This arrangement fosters social interaction between all students and helps to normalize the experience of being friends with someone who looks different than them.

Symbolic Interaction For the unit on Abraham Lincoln, each student made an art project of President Lincoln’s likeness. They were allowed to post their work on the board. This helps the student identify the classroom as their own space as they coincidentally built pride in themselves.

Task Instrumentality Each of the compartments houses a different activity that students utilize during station time. All students can easily find their assigned activity and has been clear instructions on how to put things back in place.

Pleasure Though my teacher has a number of comfortable pillows for students to lay on while reading or working on the carpet, there is no private space. In my classroom, I hope to give my students a personal oasis where they can work, read, or relax independently, even if only for a few minutes. *Actual classroom not pictured. Growth Every time the whole class receives a compliment from an adult staff member for their good behavior, they get a link on the chain. When the chain touches the floor, the students get a party of their choice. Students get the chance to celebrate their success with every additional link on the chain.
