Star of The Week and Scientist of the Week Mrs. Hake’s Friday, Jan.20th edition CLASSROOM 2016-2017 news Week in Review: Sneak Peak This week we learned all about being fair and treating people equally. We learned about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his dream for people to be treated equally. We explored this idea by looking at M&Ms and discussing how they are different on the outside but when you bite into them they are the same. We tried coloring a picture with only one color and did not find it very beautiful but when we added lots of colors it was much better- just like our world! We read a story called The Color of Us and wrote in our journal what we were the color of. Some of us said we were the color of toast, rice, cereal, sand and more. We worked on “oa” vowel friends by making peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. In math we continued to practice subtraction and addition. We were busy in our short week! at Next Week Theme of the Week: Bears Letters: “ai” says /A/ like in rain Sci/Social Studies: Hibernation and Space Math: #11-15 Rainbow word: all how Contact info: Kari Hake khake@tippcity.k12.oh.us 937-667-2275 Star of The Week and Scientist of the Week When your child is star of the week, you will receive a note to let you know. He/she will need to bring in the completed questionnaire, 3-5 pictures of your child and 1 bag of items for the students to estimate -do not send more than 30 items, this can make it too difficult for the children. If you would like to share the treat with the students, please send in a note. The star student will also take home the class “pet” (stuffed animal). Your child will write about the experiences he/she had with the pet in a class journal along with pictures. Encourage them to sound out the words with you. The pet will be sent home for 2 nights and must be returned for the next star student to have a turn. When your child is scientist, we will send home an idea for a simple experiment. You will need to gather the necessary materials and help your child with a “practice run”. Then send all the materials to school and we will assist your child when he/she performs the experiment in class. Upcoming Events: February 1- Field trip to Victoria Theatre for all students February 9- 7pm PIE meeting at Broadway February 14- Valentine’s Day Parties February 16- 3:45-7:45pm Parent Teacher Conferences February 17- Teacher In-service, No School February 20- President’s Day, No School

out all how Rainbow WORDS Valentine’s Day Party Our party is on February 14th from 2:00 – 3:00. Parents are welcome but not obligated to attend. Valentine cards are great way to practice name writing! Use this experience to practice writing first or first and last names. HOWEVER, PLEASE DO NOT ADDRESS VALENTIN CARDS TO A SPECIFIC STUDENT, AS CARDS WILL BE PASSED OUT DOWN A LINE IN ORDER TO TAKE LESS TIME AWAY FROM OUR FUN PARTY! Again, please have children only sign their own name. Also, it is easiest to pass out cards that are unisex. Valentine bags will be made at school so there is no need to send one in. THANK YOU for helping make this experience FUN and EDUCATIONAL! There are 23 students in your child’s class. *Practice identifying rainbow words in the newspaper. Use a highlighter to find them. *Have your child count some of the coins from your change jar. Identify them and their value. Sort them and make change. *Have your child sound out the items on your grocery list. *Sort candy by color or size *Add and subtract using hearts or candy *Sound out notes to people you love or Valentine cards *Sound out to write 3 sentences about flowers *Write your first and last name on Valentines *Sort your Valentine cards by character – make a graph *Sound out to read Valentine cards you receive *Use tally marks to keep track of nice deeds you do   Rainbow WORDS Trace, cut, practice: out all how
