Welcome to Curriculum Night! We’re glad you are here! Please be sure to sign in at the front table. 1

Math Curriculum Operations & Algebraic Thinking Number & Operations in Base Ten Number & Operations-Fractions Measurement & Data Geometry 2

Operations & Algebraic Thinking Interpret whole number products and quotients. Fluently multiply and divide within 100. Solve two step word problems using all four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division). Identify patterns in addition and multiplication.

Number and Operations in Base Ten Fluently add and subtract within 1000. Use place value to round whole numbers to the nearest 10 or 100. Multiply one-digit whole numbers by multiples of 10.

Number and Operations - Fractions Understand that fractions are part of a whole. Understand a fraction as a number on a number line. Explain equivalence of fractions

Measurement and Data Determine and write time to the nearest minute. Measure and estimate liquid volumes. Represent data in picture and bar graphs. Generate measurement data using a ruler. Begin to understand and measure the area of plane figures.

Geometry Understand the characteristics of shapes can be different and shared. Partition shapes into parts with equal areas.

How can I help my child at home? Practice multiplication and division facts. Allow them to solve day to day problems by posing questions like: What time is it? How much time do we have until ____. About how much would this cost? Point out math in the real world for them. For example, find graphs in the paper. Use iXL at home…but be sure to sign in! 8

Read to Achieve Read to Achieve is a state mandated program to ensure that all third grade students will be on grade level in reading by the end of the grade. A Read to Achieve information session will be held on October 11 at 6:00 pm. We highly encourage you to attend this meeting. We will be happy to give you paper to write any questions you have at this time. These questions will be answered at the information session.

How can I help my child at home? Read nightly with your child. Ask them about what they read. Expose them to a variety of texts: newspaper, magazines, books Watch movies that parallel with books. (Holes, The City of Ember, Harry Potter) 14

How can I help my child at home? Ask them questions about what they discussed in science. Encourage them to be observant. Take your children outside and ask them to explain their surroundings and observations. 16

Social Studies Students will understand historical events and how they affect their local community. Students will understand how to use maps. Students will gain some knowledge of economics and financial literacy. Students will begin to understand local government and its impact on the community. Students will begin to see how culture plays a role in different communities. 17

How can I help my child at home? Watch the local news. Read the newspaper. Talk to your child about current events. 18

Writing All students can benefit from writing at home. Ask your child to write about what they have read or how they are feeling. Encourage correct capitalization and punctuation. Practice is key in writing! A 20 minute Writer’s Workshop has been included in our daily schedule this year! 19
