What does a Guided Reading session look like? Guided reading happens daily for 30 minutes Each session is run by the class teacher There are 6 children per group, all reading the same book (range of text types – fiction, non-fiction, playscripts, dictionaries etc.) While the teacher is running the session, the rest of the class are working independently.
Book Policy Books need to be in children’s book bags everyday New books can not be sent home unless the old one has been returned Lost or damaged books will be charged at £4
New Curriculum requirements for Year 1 Develop pleasure in reading Listen to a wide range of poems, stories and non-fiction Link what they read to own experiences Become familiar with key stories and fairy tales Recognise predictable phrases Check that the text makes sense to them Make inferences on the basis of what has been said and done Predict what might happen
New Curriculum requirements for Year 2 Listen to and discuss a wide range of contemporary and classic poetry, stories and non-fiction Discuss the sequence of events in books Retell a wide range of stories and fairy tales Recognise simple recurring language Discuss and clarify the meaning of new words Continue to build up a repertoire of poems learned by heart Checking that the text makes sense Making inferences on the basis of what has been said and done Asking and answering questions Predicting what might happen on the basis of what has been said so far
