Department of Environment Background Report on National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP) of the Islamic Republic of IRAN Asghar Mohammadi Fazel Tehran - 11 July 2016

NBSAP Development Demand in Iran Iran’s commitment to the CBD (ratified in 1997) National approach to conserve biodiversity Compilation of national strategies for environmental conservation NBSAP development started in November 1998 (UNDP/GEF project)

Process for Development Secretariat setup, NSC and 4 WGs (4 CLAs, 30+ LAs, 200+ CAs) Studying other countries and their experiences Organizing national and provincial consultative workshops/meetings Developing draft Goals, Policies, Strategies and a AP wish-list Public call for review of the outcomes (200+ feedback received from governmental bodies, academia, industries, NGOs, etc. ) Finalizing the NAP by the NSC (a series of 25 actions proposed, each with some headline activities)
