IEEE Milestones Program Guidelines Milestone proposal is submitted by a Member on ethw.org, sponsored by a Section, a Society, or a Chapter, Advocate is chosen to review proposal and assist proposers When the sponsoring unit is not an IEEE Section, endorsement by the appropriate Section is required. Approval by Advocate, including wording of citation Approval by IEEE History Committee Approval by IEEE Board of Directors Milestone Dedication Ceremony
First Steps in Proposing a Milestone Choose a proposer Obtain the sponsorship of an IEEE Organizational Unit (Section, Society, Council, Chapter, etc.) who will pay for the plaque(s) and ceremony Obtain the permission of the owner of the site where the Milestone plaque will be mounted 5/7/2018
Process takes from 12-15 months Depending on History Committee and Board of Directors meeting schedule. Proposers should allow time to plan dedication ceremony and cast plaque(s) Plaques take 8 weeks to cast 5/7/2018

Volunteer advocate works with Nominators Ensures sufficient citations and references to support the claim Helps develop a concise and accurate citation Recommends IEEE History Committee action on proposal 5/7/2018
Approving the Milestone IEEE History Committee votes whether or not to recommend IEEE Board of Directors final approval If the History Committee recommends approval, History Center staff submits proposal to the Board of Directors for final action. 5/7/2018
Planning the Dedication Ceremony Dedication ceremonies are in the hands of the sponsoring IEEE Organizational Unit. May be as elaborate or simple as desired. Opportunities for local press, corporate, and political involvement, and high visibility for IEEE 5/7/2018
Planning the dedication ceremony Templates are available on the ETHW to help in the planning Recommend contacting the IEEE President’s Office early in the process to arrange and invite IEEE speakers. 5/7/2018
