1. Militarism Definition: Countries rapidly expanding their armies and building weapons. Germany built up their navy  Britain felt threatened  Britain built their navy  Arms Race Arms Race = competition between nations for superiority

HMS Dreadnought 1906 Fastest, most highly advanced warship of its time Sparked the arms race because the German Imperial Navy felt the need to “catch up” after Signified the beginning of the amazing technological advances about to happen due to the arms race / war Dreadnought was soon eclipsed by the Orion-class battleships in 1912. Fastest, most highly advanced warship of the time Sparked the arms race because the German Imperial Navy felt the need to “catch up” after this was built - Due to their greater firepower, these new ships were dubbed "super-dreadnoughts

2. Alliances No, not the reality TV kind!!!

2. (Military) Alliances Definition: Countries agree to work together and support each other if invaded by another country. Triple Alliance vs. Triple Entente Significance: Increased chance of large war because if ONE was threatened, ALL engaged in war.

E E = Entente A = Alliance E E A A A Sarajevo Take note: Ottoman Empire in textbook. A Sarajevo

3. Imperialism Yes, this is an “ISM” which means….?

3. Imperialism Definition: Taking over (acquisition) of overseas territories. The desire to build an empires. Countries were in competition and challenged each other for the rights to other countries = tension!

4. Nationalism! Definition: Intense loyalty to one’s own country and culture. People did not want to be taken over by other powers (See #3). (Also, hmm.. go figure!) Nations that were being taken over fought back.

Cause vs. Trigger Cause: Trigger: reasons built up over time that can make grounds for action, motivation, certain beliefs etc occur. Trigger: an event that sets a course of action in motion

The Trigger Franz Ferdinand assassinated by a Serb nationalist (I/N)  Austria-Hungary blamed Serbia & declared war (M)  Russia mobilized troops (A) Germany does the same in defence (A)  All members join the war!
