Context & Introductions Session A2: Personal narratives and histories 9:55-10:20 Context & Introductions Session A2: Personal narratives and histories How did you come to live in this place? How long have you lived here? Do you intend to stay living here in the future? Could you see yourself moving away? Do you feel connected to the place? Does it feel like home? What do you like or dislike about it? Do you feel proud of the town and area?

Session B1: Personal Maps 10:20-10:35 Places & services Session B1: Personal Maps Key in your daily life (yellow) Familiar (yellow) Special & cherished (yellow) Part of the heart of the community (yellow) Disliked, feared or avoided (blue) Lost but important (pink)

10:35-10:45 BREAK! Grab a cup of tea, then transfer your post-it notes to the large community map on the wall.

Session B2: Community map –discussion Places & services 10:45 -11:20 Session B2: Community map –discussion What function do these places play in your life? (meet daily needs? socialising? escaping to?) Why do you value them? Are there places that you go to all the time, and those that you only go to every now and then? Are there places that you dislike, fear, avoid? Do these places form the ‘heart’ of the community? Are the places very distinctive or vital to your community? (i.e. if they were lost it would be bad) Are there places that you feel are under threat?   Those places that have already been lost: What difference has this made? Do you understand why these places have been lost? And more generally, how do you feel the area has changed over the years? (timeframes) Finally, where does your local area begin and end? Does the large map really represent the boundary of ‘home’?

Landscape & Land Management 11:20-11:35 Landscape & Land Management Session C1: Emotional responses to landscape When asked ‘what is the countryside and landscape like in your local area’, what thoughts come into your head? Use: Descriptive words (e.g. wild, beautiful, ugly) Activities you associate with the landscape (e.g. farming, hill walking) Emotions (e.g. how you feel when you’re out in the local countryside).

Landscape & Land Management 11:35-11:55 Session C2: Facilitated discussion on land management How much do you feel you understand why the landscape looks the way it does? What natural or man-made processes do you think give your landscape its character? Does the landscape feel familiar? Do you feel ‘at home’ in it? What is it about the landscape that speaks to you as ‘home’? Has the landscape changed in the last 30 years? How and why?

11:55-12:00 BREAK! Any remaining pink post-it notes about landscape should be added to the community map now.

People & Organisations 12:00-12:15 Session D1: Identifying power structures Who are the individuals and groups who are influential in deciding what happens around here? Do you feel these people really represent you/speak for you? Have these groups and people changed much in the last 20 years? Do you feel you, personally, have capacity to be involved in local decision-making? Sports groups Activity groups Interest groups Politicians

Session E2: Historical energy stories Community energy 13:15-13:30 Session E2: Historical energy stories How do you think the pie chart that we saw showing how we use energy today would be different for 80-90 years ago? What would people have used to heat their homes? Was energy generated in the same way as it is today? (gas, electricity) Was there a limit to how much energy could be used, or when? How far, and how, was energy transported before it was used?

Is there any energy generation infrastructure in the landscape around you? Is there any other infrastructure in the landscape which is providing us with energy? Do you notice it? What emotions (if any) come to mind when you think about the infrastructure you’ve identified?

Energy and the landscape Session F2: Energy in the landscape (future) 13:50-14:05 Session F2: Energy in the landscape (future) What changes do you think you’ll see in the landscape in the next 10-20 years? How do you feel about this change? How acceptable is the idea of landscape change (related to energy supply) to you? Are there any scenarios that make you feel more negative or more positive about such changes?

14:05-14:15 BREAK! Please clear the tables and make sure you’re out of the room for this break to give us space to set up the next session.

16:10-16:20 HOMEWORK! Talk to your friends and family about today’s workshop in general   Ask your friends and family what they think about the ‘community energy plan’ that you created using the CESAR tool – would they be happy with what you proposed? Bring something back to the next workshop, something inspired by the workshop: a new photo; an old photo; a recorded conversation; an object; or just your thoughts.
