Classroom Procedures and Expectations 2016-2017 Mrs. Jones Classroom Procedures and Expectations 2016-2017

Procedures Procedures are a part of life. We follow procedures when we go to the movies, eat at a restaurant, or fly on an airplane. The reason we have procedures is so people can function in society knowing the proper and appropriate way to do things. Procedures can make things run more efficiently, help people to be more successful, and also make things safer. Think of what would happen if people didn’t follow the procedure at a stop sign or red light! This classroom also has its own set of procedures. These procedures help to establish our classroom culture. When everyone follows the procedures, our class becomes safer, calmer, and a better environment in which to learn. Although you may not remember them at first, please do your best to follow the procedures below. Let’s all choose to end the year strongly!!! -Mrs. Jones

How to Enter the Classroom and Start Class Calmly and quietly enter the room and take your assigned seat. Immediately get to work at your desk. There will always be something for you to do. Please do not enter the classroom if the door is closed, or if there is not a teacher present. You start the class- not the teacher! And you need to start right away! Take out any homework due that day and leave it out on your desk. Read the Objectives and Daily Agenda to see what you will be working on in class that day. Complete the “Do Now” activity that will be posted on the board. Read your independent book. If you have been assigned to I-Station, please log on and use your time wisely.

What to Do with Your Belongings Please keep all of your belongings on the shelf under your chair or under the table during class. Books, binders, and other belongings need to be kept out of the aisles at all times for safety reasons. It can quite treacherous when everyone’s stuff is spilling into the aisles, so please, let’s keep them clear. Additionally, please keep all four legs of your chair on the GROUND at all times. It is dangerous to lean back in your chair, and it also ruins the chairs.

If You are Absent Each class is assigned a student to take attendance and act as the “Absent Buddy”. If you are out, the Absent Buddy will write down what you missed on a “While You Were Out” form and attach any papers given out on that day. These papers will be placed in the “Absent Student Pickup” tray next to the door. It is your responsibility, not the teachers, to collect this work and see that it is handed in. You have one day for every day that you were out to make up the work. All tests and quizzes should be made up within five school days.

Tardies If you are entering the class after it has started, put your late pass in the teacher’s tardy bin on her desk. If you do not have a late pass, plan on explaining to your teacher what prevented you from making it to class on time.

Turning in Papers Homework needs to be handed in the day it is due. In most cases, homework should not be handed in ahead of time since it may get lost and we will review the answers in class. To pass in your paper, place your paper on the desk to your right. If/when you receive a paper, place yours on top, and continue passing the stack to your right. There will be no need to tap, touch, or poke anyone to get their attention. Once all the papers from the team have reached the last person, they may pass the stack to the teacher assistant. If you are the only one that needs to hand something in, you may turn the paper in. If You Do Not Have Your Homework If you do not have your homework, you still need to turn in a paper. There is a “Homework Excuse Notes” folder by the door for these instances. Once you realize that you do not have your homework, take a Homework Excuse Note and fill it out completely. Hand this paper in when the teacher collects the homework. Late Work/Missing Work (if absent) The teacher will accept late work for up to three days; but it will be -10 points for each day late. You will need to fill out a “Late Form” completely and staple on top of the late assignment. You will need to turn this paper in the “Late Work” tray for your class by the door. (6A, 6B, 6C)

Sharpening a Pencil Please sharpen pencils before class begins. This will be the responsibility of the supply chief at the team table. If necessary, you may swap out your pencils during class but NOT while the teacher is speaking. Use your own judgment to determine a good time. Use the hand signal “3.” Only one student is allowed to swap at a time.

iPads in Class Using an iPad in Class Please remember that we have iPads in class to help us learn, not to distract us. Playing games or accessing social media sites is strictly prohibited.

Restroom Procedure You do need to ask permission to use the bathroom; by using the hand signal “1.However, do not ask to go during direct instruction time (while the teacher is talking) unless it is an emergency. Only one girl and one boy are allowed out of the classroom at a time to use the bathroom. If you need to use the bathroom during class, put the “Boys” or “Girls” bathroom pass on your desk, and neatly fill in the date, your name, your destination, and the time on the Student Coupon and place on my desk for my signature. When you return, hang the bathroom pass back up. Please remember to wash your hands before returning to class. Bathroom privileges may be restricted if abused.

Using Classroom Supplies This classroom is well stocked with supplies to help you complete your classwork. The black bookcase in the front has been designated as the Supply Center. There, you can find: white lined paper, graph paper, computer paper, colored pencils, markers, tape, highlighters, expo markers and erasers, and index cards. Glue sticks, rulers and scissors will be in the cups at each team station. These supplies are to only be retrieved with permission from the teacher and the supply chief of the team. Please return all supplies back to their appropriate container when you are doing using them. Note: supplies are for use in the class only. You may not borrow them to use in other classes.

ATTENTION When the Teacher Wants Your Attention When I want your attention, I will: Stand in front of the class Raise my hand – Give me “5” and count down 5, 4, 3, 2, 1. OR I will use the phrase “Character Counts” and you will respond “All the time” Wait for everyone to be quiet Begin speaking

How to Set up your Paper How to Set Up a Paper Most papers that will be handed out this year will already have a heading on them. However, if you are handing in an assignment on your own paper, please adhere to the follow guidelines. Each paper must have five things in the top right-hand corner. Your first and last name Your number for my class The date The class section (6A, 6B, 6C) The assignment (Example: What is Force?)
