Three Semester Program Semester 1 (Fall 2017) Work with designated teaching mentor Seminar on college science teaching Semester 2 (Spring 2018) teach one section of lecture Semester 3 (Fall 2018) teach one section of lecture again

Program Requirements Must be able to commit to all three semesters Must attend all Seminar meetings – teaching appointment is contingent upon participation Must have sign-off from your PI Must have current documentation to work in United States Must have satisfactory teaching in Semester 2 to be re-appointed in Semester 3

Semester 1: Work with mentor Depending on course assignment Work with assigned teaching coordinator Prepare for teaching course in spring 2018

Semester 1: Seminar September 28 Establishing a productive classroom atmosphere: Classroom management and elements of a good syllabus First day of class, promoting good classroom culture, syllabus statements October 19 How to make lecture effective: Using problem solving, case study, dilemmas, problem sets, and discussions to facilitate student learning Multiple representations as a teaching technique November 16 Evaluating student learning (and your teaching): An introduction to classroom assessment Blooms taxonomy, rubrics, assessment December 7 The science of learning and the learning of science: A discussion of learning theories and applications Constructivism, conceptual change, inquiry, learning outcomes

Semester 1: Seminar Anyone welcome to attend regardless of institutional assignment. All seminars will be held at the TU Center for STEM Excellence from 3:00-4:30pm. Columbus Center at 701 E. Pratt Street Suite 200 Baltimore MD 21202

Semesters 2 and 3: Teach Course Teach a lecture section as adjunct faculty Several introductory courses Biology 120 – non majors Biology 190 – Health Professions majors Biol 221L or 222L – A&P labs Chem intro course

Semesters 2 and 3: Teach Course All instructional materials are provided – lecture notes, student worksheets, case studies, assessments – modify as necessary for your teaching Observations and feedback from master teachers Ongoing instructional support as needed
