How do the Following factors Influence Water Supply Climate 2. River Systems 3. Geology

Learning Objectives To understand how these physical factors can influence water supplies in the case studies of India and California

Water Supply In India Low Pressure due to the position of the ITCZ Monsoon Climate Due to the movement of the ITCZ Little supply Dec – May Monsoon June - Oct High pressure due to descending air Brahmaputra Ganges Indus 2. Changing Discharge in the Ganges, Indus and Brahmaputra. This varies seasonally due to the Monsoon and snow melting in the Himalayas 3. Geology Aquifers in the North = good water supply Low Pressure due to the position of the ITCZ

California P. 54 Examine the information on this page and make notes on the Physical factors which can influence water supply here. Cover : Climate and relief – include relief rainfall ( area which benefit and suffer due to this), Sierra Nevada mountains and the deserts e.g Death Valley and Mojave desert. Mention how surface runoff can vary due to the relief and so influence water levels. Weather systems which affect California – high pressure and El Nino How and why river discharge here varies – include the Scramento river, the San Joaquin river, times of the year when the discharge varies How the Geology varies in the region and the impact this has on aquifer levels
