National Healthy Schools Programme

Objectives Summarise the National Healthy Schools Programme Emphasise the necessity of the whole school approach Consider the link it has with PE.

All – will be able to list the 4 core themes Most – identify how the programme links to PE Some – Link the 4 core themes and consider it as a whole school policy.

What is it? Introduced by the government as a long term initiative to improve the health and achievement of children. Young people can then make informed health and life choices in order to reach their full potential. Whole school approach – something that is essential to everything a school does. Programme based on 4 core themes.

Personal, social and health education Involves sex, relationship and drug education. Contributes to the 5 outcomes of the NC – being healthy, staying safe, enjoying and achieving, making a positive contribution and economic wellbeing. Provides young people with knowledge to make informed choices.

Healthy Eating Contributes to the 5 NC outcomes. Gives young people the confidence and skills to make informed choices about healthy food. Healthy and nutritious food is available all day. The National Healthy Schools Prog. And the School Food Trust work together to support schools.

Physical Activity Contributes to the 5 NC outcomes. Young people are provided with a range of opportunities to be physically active. Young people understand how physical activity can help them to be more healthy and be a part of everyday life.

Emotional health and wellbeing Contributes to the 5 NC outcomes. Supports vulnerable individuals and groups Establishes clear bullying policy Establishes behaviour and rewards policies Sets up a confidential pastoral support system.

Task 1 Answer questions to test your knowledge How could levels of economic wellbeing affect your personal and social health? What is meant by a whole school approach? Within SJLHS how has the school improved the young peoples diets and helped with informed choices?
