Working with MAVEN Data Alexandria DeWolfe MAVEN Science Data Center Manager LASP, University of Colorado

About MAVEN data MAVEN has been taking data at Mars for ~15 months Three instrument suites: Particles & Fields (SWEA, SWIA, SEP, STATIC, LPW, MAG, EUV) Remote Sensing (IUVS) NGIMS Data has been released to the public: Currently released up through November 15, 2015 New releases occur every three months and cover 3 months Next release: mid-May, will include Nov 2015 – Feb 2016

Data types Instrument data formats: Other data: IUVS: FITS NGIMS: CSV Particles & Fields: CDF, except MAG = ASCII. Other data: Key Parameter (KP) data: ASCII tables containing specific parameters Two types: in situ + IUVS Accelerometer Ancillary & Events SPICE

Data levels In general: IUVS is the exception: Level 0 = binary telemetry packets Level 1 = intermediate processing products Level 2 = calibrated science data products Level 3 = derived, resampled, etc. IUVS is the exception: 1b: calibrated images 1c: spatial/spectral binning, smoothing 2: profiles & maps of densities & column abundances

MAVEN on the Planetary Data System Planetary Plasma Interactions (PPI) http://ppi.pds.nasa.gov/ All PF: SWIA, SWEA, SEP, STATIC, LPW, MAG, EUV In situ Key Parameters Ancillary Atmospheres http://atmos.nmsu.edu/ NGIMS IUVS & IUVS KP Accelerometer

The MAVEN Science Data Center (SDC) Central repository for all MAVEN data Data and documentation for all instruments Multiple ways of accessing data Preview data: Interactive plots of MAVEN Key Parameters PF Level 2 summary plots Data access & visualization software Data availability information Mission events list https://lasp.colorado.edu/maven/sdc/

Pages for each dataset Documentation Caveats Links to the individual files Links to compressed tar files

Ways to get data from the SDC Dataset pages: compressed collections available Search: find data by instrument, date, and level Browse the SDC’s storage for individual files For best results: Use the same directory structure as the SDC

The MAVEN DIViDE Toolkit IDL software for downloading and working with MAVEN data and models. Available on the SDC website under “Software,” with documentation & tutorials, including videos. Downloading data: Easily download Key Parameter and Level 2 files Will search for files that you don’t already have Working with data Loads Key Parameter data into IDL structures 2D and 3D plots of data; overlay on map or globe

Interactive plots

Reading material Instrument “SIS” documents “Software Interface Specification” Contains information about the instrument, how data was collected and processed, and how data is formatted and organized. Mission papers in Space Science Reviews Collected on the MAVEN SDC website, “Publications” https://lasp.colorado.edu/maven/sdc/public/pages/ publications.html MAVEN page on the PDS http://atmos.nmsu.edu/data_and_services/atmospheres_data/ MAVEN/maven_main.html
