Role of Impaired Lower-Limb Venous Innervation in the Pathogenesis of the Chronic Fatigue Syndrome  David H.P. Streeten, MB, DPhil  The American Journal of the Medical Sciences  Volume 321, Issue 3, Pages 163-167 (March 2001) DOI: 10.1097/00000441-200103000-00001 Copyright © 2001 Southern Society for Clinical Investigation Terms and Conditions

Figure 1 LVDT record of the effects in a patient (#6) of increasing rates of norepinephrine (NE) infusion on distensibility of hand and foot vein during each 1minute inflation of a sphygmomanometer cuff on the leg to 45mm Hg. It is evident that the venoconstriction induced by increasing rates of NE infusion resulted in steadily reduced venous distensibility and that distensibility of 0.06mm occurred at a NE infusion rate of 16ng/min in the hand vein while approximately similar distensibility (0.05mm) occurred when NE was infused at 0.7ng/min into the foot vein. Figure 2 Effects of norepinephrine (NE) infusions at increasing rates on compliance of foot veins in CFS patients (■) and control subjects (●). The percentage reductions in venous compliance induced by NE infused at 4ng/min exceed the 95% confidence limits and, in all but patient 3, the individual reductions in the control subjects. The responses to NE infusion are significantly increased in the CFS patients compared with the controls both at NE infusion rates of 1 (P<0.05) and 4 (P<0.01) ng/min. Figure 3 Comparison of the mean percentage reductions in venous compliance of foot veins induced by norepinephrine infusions in patients with chronic fatigue syndrome (●) and healthy control subjects (■). The ED50 and ED80 of the changes in venous compliance of the foot veins of the patients were significantly greater (P<0.05) than these values in the healthy subjects.
