Common Core Standards Our curriculum is aligned to a new set of learning standards. These standards tell what students need to learn each year in order to graduate from high school ready to succeed in college and a job. Students are asked to … read more complex texts (with an emphasis on non-fiction), do more writing master math concepts

Reading Each week we will focus on letter sounds, reading strategies and reading skills. Each week children will receive a folder with letter sounds and some sight words.

1st Grade Expectations: Breakfast begins at 7:30am in the cafeteria Children must be on the line by 8:00am every morning in the multi-purpose room (if not they are considered late and will be marked late). Children should come to school with sharpened pencils daily. Children will come home with a homework notebook and folder daily. All homework should be done nightly and in your child’s handwriting. If your child has difficulty with the homework, please send a note or see us during parent engagement time on Tuesday after school until 3:05 pm. Children should read everyday including weekends. If your child is absent, please write a note for the reason of the absence. Talk to your child and ask them questions about the school day.

Academic and Personal Behavior Your child should also master other skills and behaviors that lead to success in school. Attendance Persistence Participation Good work habits Good communication and collaboration skills Good behavior Independence Encourage uniforms

Class Rules 1.Listen when others are talking. 2.Follow directions. 3.Keep your hands, feet and objects to yourself. 4.Work quietly and do not disturb others. 5.Raise your hand and wait to be called on. 6.Be a good friend. 7.Try your best!

Positive Behavior Interventions and Support (PBIS) Be a P.S 35 STAR Safety Teamwork Accountability Respect

Homework Expectations Homework is given every night. Homework will reinforce work that has been done in class. Students should work towards independence. Homework sheet will be placed in homework notebook every Monday. If your child is having difficulty, please write me a note.

School Calendar The school calendar is on the school’s website (PS35q.org). The calendar will have important dates. Additional reminders are posted on the front door.
