Multiplication of monomial and binomials. Lesson 5-9 Pages 240 - 244

Objective #1: Multiply a monomial and a polynomial. 6(x + y) How would we multiply this problem? DISTRIBUTIVE PROPERTY 6x + 6y We will use the distributive property to multiply monomials and polynomials.

Examples: 1.) 2.)

Objective #2: Multiply two binomials. We can use the distributive property twice to multiply two binomials. 3.) (x + 4)(x + 5) x(x) + x(5) + 4(x) + 4(5)

F.O.I.L Use F.O.I.L to find the product of two binomials. First Outside Inside Last

Examples: 4.) (x + 3)(x – 2) binomial times binomial First: x(x) = Outside: x(-2) = -2x Inside: 3(x) = 3x Last: 3(-2) = -6 Is your answer in descending order?

5.) (3x + y)(-3x – 4y) First: 3x(-3x) = Outside: 3x(-4y) = Inside: y(-3x) = Last: y(-4y) = Collect like terms.

6.) First: Outside: Inside: Last: Combine like terms!
