10 Minutes of Independent Reading

Criteria for Success At the end of today’s lesson, I will analyze two versions of a poem, written text & spoken word, to compare and contrast how the techniques of both are similar and different. I will also, cite textual evidence to support my analysis of the two versions of the poem.

“Life Doesn’t Frighten Me At All” Revisited Your Task Revisit the poem, and using your poetry notes and t-chart, highlight the various writing techniques that Maya Angelou used in the poem.

“Life Doesn’t Frighten Me At All” Revisited – Graphic Organizer Whole Group Activity What techniques did Maya Angelou use in the written version of her poem? What information is presented? How is it presented?

Techniques & Effects in Audio/Live Performances Mini-Lesson

“Life Doesn’t Frighten Me At All” Audio/Live Performance Your Task Listen to the audio/live performance of the poem. Make note of the techniques used in the audio/live version and the effect they have on the poem for you, the reader. As you listen, consider the following: How is the text version of the poem different when you read it with your eyes than when you hear it with your ears?

“Life Doesn’t Frighten Me At All” Audio/Live Performance Graphic Organizer Whole Group Activity What techniques did Maya Angelou use in the audio/live performance version of her poem? What information is presented? How is it presented?

“Life Doesn’t Frighten Me At All” Graphic Organizer Independent Task Complete the last section of the graphic organizer for both the written & audio/live performance version of the poem. Respond the question: What insights did you gain from this version that you did not gain from the other? What was it about the techniques that made this possible?

“Life Doesn’t Frighten Me At All” Graphic Organizer Turn & Talk In your partnership, compare and contrast your individual thoughts, notes, and differences between the written version and the audio version.

“Life Doesn’t Frighten Me At All” Exit Ticket Respond to the following prompt in 4-6 well constructed sentences: Considering the techniques of both the written and audio versions of the poem ‘Life Doesn’t Frighten Me At All’, decided which version of the poem had the most effect on you as a reader/listener. Discuss what techniques in your chosen version had the most effect and explain why. Remember to cite textual evidence to support your response.
