The Necessary Fourth Leg TEACHING RESEARCH SERVICE DEVELOPMENT

Faculty development is both challenging and immensely rewarding. Why we named our unit The Center for Faculty Engagement (CFE) Faculty development is both challenging and immensely rewarding.

The Reciprocal Benefits of Embedding the Pursuit of Excellence in Teaching & Learning in the Hands of Faculty Reinforcing institutional values: > life-long learning > teaching and learning at the heart of the college

A Strong Faculty Development Program Involves The infrastructure of the CFE is built directly on the participation, leadership, and insights of the college faculty: Faculty Learning Communities Faculty Lunch & Learn Curricular Workshops Faculty Resource Bureau New Faculty Induction CFE Advisory Committee A Strong Faculty Development Program Involves

Modeling Best Practices in Teaching and Learning At the heart of Reynolds’ CFE is the focus on teaching and learning and on best practices grounded in scholarship and research. Workshops are developed with and delivered by faculty leaders. Modeling Best Practices in Teaching and Learning “. . . [S]hort-term interventions, such as an afternoon faculty development workshop, don’t have much of an impact when it comes to sustained behavior change. On the other hand, data suggest that well-designed, on-going faculty development programs are worth the time and effort.” --Faculty Focus, Magna Publications Handbook for Facilitators Handbook for New Faculty Mentors

Define the objectives of such faculty development. Define the desired outcomes of the training in terms of its impact on teaching and learning. Plan the best ways to develop and deliver such training. Developing faculty development programming in alignment with your institutional priorities
