Fig. 1 Scanning electron microscopic appearance of midregion of 11 cm long PTFE graft 30 days after venous implantation as mesosystemic shunt. Entire graft surface is confluently covered by cell layer resembling endothelium. Cells are not aligned with bloodstream and continue to display random orientation typically found after in vitro endothelialization. Continual antithrombogenic function of cultured endothelium is indicated by lack of platelet or fibrin appositions. Bar = 0.1 mm. Fig. 2 Immunohistochemical proof of endothelial nature of covering cell layer. Applying APAAP method by use of monoclonal antibodies against factor VIII – related antigen, entire surface monolayer has strongly positive staining results, whereas remaining graft — though densely infiltrated by cells — does not show any positive staining results. Faintly staining underlying protein matrix is well preserved, with only minor artifactual detachments. No thrombotic or cellular adherences are seen on graft surface.
