Baroque Period 1600-1750 Cultural Trends Baroque is a Portugese word which means distorted, mis-shapen, or ugly. Royal families (king, queens, princes, princesses, dukes, duchesses), wealthy landowners, businessmen, and professionals (doctors, lawyers) had money and power to hire artists and musicians. People of lower classes did not have much ability to make their lives better. Musicians and artists were in the same class as household servants. Many wars (mainly religious wars) between the many small kingdoms broke out, creating upheaval.
