Words to the Music By: Katie Smith Sammy Cahn Words to the Music By: Katie Smith

Early Life/Career Name Change: Was born Sammy Cohen to a Jewish family; changed his last name from Cohen to Kahn so he wouldn’t be confused with another famous lyricist, George M. Cohen; then he had to change the spelling of Kahn to Cahn so he wouldn’t be confused with Gus Cahn, another successful song writer Tin Pan Alley Composer

Career First started working with Saul Chaplin who wrote most of the music for Cahn’s songs Chaplin also taught Cahn more on the piano Cahn used his bar mitzvah money to take violin lessons After Cahn started to gain a name from Tin Pan Alley his name attracted celebrities that wanted to sing his songs Wrote musicals in Hollywood and Broadway

His Career is pretty eventful… Cahn became a well known lyricist and teamed up with James Van Heusen who wrote much of the music for Cahn’s songs The pair became a good team and ended up writing over 80 songs for none other than Frank Sinatra He also wrote songs for Doris Day, Mario Lanza, Jackie Gleason, Judy Garland, Nat King Cole and many others

Have I ever heard his music? The answer is quite simply: yes Ever listen to Christmas music? He wrote “Let it Snow, Let it Snow, Let it Snow!” Any Disney fans? He wrote “You Can Fly, You Can Fly, You Can Fly!” I think he liked repetition…

Other Famous Works “Saturday Night is the Loneliest Night of the Week”: performed by Frank Sinatra http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GiO6KUqXW54 “Call Me Irresponsible”: Covered here by Michael Buble http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ANGWy_b_ovY “High Hopes”, “Come Dance with Me”, “Ain’t That a Kick in the Head?”, “Come Fly With Me”
