To Know what Cyber crime is

By the end of today you will; Know what cyber crime means. Know the different types of cyber crime. Know how to protect yourself against cyber crime.

So what is cyber crime? “Cyber “ means “belonging to computers”. “Crime” means “an action which is punishable by law. So, Cybercrime is a computer action that is punishable by law. Cyber crime is one of the fastest growing types of illegal activity in the world. 3 out of every 4 people have been a victim of some sort of cyber crime. Cyber crime is hard to prove and difficult to find the criminals involved so it is important to be able to protect yourself.

What are the types of cyber crime? There are three main types of Cyber Crime; Phishing Hacking Online Harassment

What is Phishing? Phishing is when you get sent an e-mail that looks official but is really a trick to get to your money or information. It asks for you to some information . Old people are particularly vulnerable to this.

What is Hacking? Hackers will use your internet connection to get control of your computer. They can then do anything they want with your computer. Computer Hackers have been responsible for closing down the Microsoft corporation, stealing millions of pounds from banks, closing down websites and much, much more. Hackers hack just because they can!

Online Harassment This does not involve money. It is still against the Law and a crime. Bullying, Trolling and Slander can all carry a prison sentence. Harassing someone else means making them feel uncomfortable or upsetting them over and over again.

How to stay safe Make sure you have a legitimate antivirus Know that games, screensavers and software downloaded from the web can contain spyware. Have a really good password. If your computer slows down you have spyware. Before you give any of your details find out who wants it, why they want it and how they are going to keep it safe. Update your browser and operating system regularly. Delete any emails from companies asking for your information Now play this quiz
