INTRODUCTION A touchscreen is an input device that requires the user to simply touch the display screen which has a sensitive glass placed on it, in order to get the desired input. A touch screen is based on CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) Technology, that accepts direct on screen input The user can use the touchscreen to react to what is displayed and to control how it is displayed The popularity of smartphones, tablets, and many types of information appliances is driving the demand and acceptance of common touchscreens for portable and functional electronics Touchscreen allows the user to interact directly to the interface displayed over the monitor, rather than indirectly with a cursor controlled by a mouse or touchpad. Such interface navigation does not require any intermediate device that would need to be held in the hand. This technology is associated with a variety of touch detections which are considered as the core of its emergence such as the resistive, capacitive, surface acoustic wave, infrared matrix and others.

RECENT ADVANCEMENT OF TOUCHSCREEN TECHNOLOGIES These devices also permit multiple users to interact with the touchscreen simultaneously The development of making touchscreen facilities the tracking of more than one finger on the screen, thus operations that require more than one finger are possible A remarkable feature of touch screens that is evident with our present technology is being able to shift forward or backward from one image to another by a touch of the image and quickly sliding the finger left or right on the screen. A user can instigate an event depending on the finger’s movement direction. This finger gestures is just an example of the technique called radial menus. It is then this technique which is used by some of our today’s touch screen technology such as in mobile phones and many other devices. These were just some of the important innovations of touch screen technology and thus, paved the way for its continued advancements. What has then been started years ago has prompted every complex developments of the present, extending its influence to the future.

This dual touchscreen technology is also being seen in mobile devices like the Kyocera Echo, which has the versatility to run as a tablet, two separate screens, or two complimenting screens. The phone, available through Sprint, can run different apps simultaneously or act as a screen and virtual keyboard.  Sensitive To Pressure: Some touchscreens offer pressure-sensitive technology now. However, they aren’t very accurate due to the fact that they measure pressure by surface area (i.e., as you push hard, more of your finger covers the screen). Using different amounts of pressure to manipulate the screen not only would require fewer buttons, it also would provide increased control on every screen. On a computer or e-reader, for example, this technology would allow a user to scroll down a page faster by pushing a little harder. On a music player, users could browse through songs faster or slower depending on pressure.  Hover Awareness: Mitsubishi and Cypress are among the technology experts who have unveiled ‘hover detection’ demos. Perhaps an extension of the pressure sensitive touch screen is the fact that eventually, you may not even have to make contact with a touch screen to get a reaction. These screens can not only react when the panel is touched, but can also detect when a finger is near the surface.

APPLICATION OF TOUCH SCREEN TECHNOLOGY Customer self services, control and automation systems, assistive technology, Computer based training Fast paced retail or restaurant environment apply touchscreen in cash registers, order entry stations, seating and reservation systems and so much more. This is based on the fact that touchscreen systems are quite easy to use so employees can get work done quickly, and training time can be reduced for new employees. Because input is done right on the screen, valuable counter space can be saved Due to the fact that the user-friendly touch screen interface can be less intimidating and easier to use than other input devices especially for amateurs, many individuals with little or no computer skills or experience make use of information kiosks, tourism displays, trade show displays and other electronic displays Point of sales system Industrial control systems Information Kiosk, Gaming/Entertainment/Multimedia, Industrial and Medical Instrumentation, ATMs and Banks, Automobile Industry, Market Research, etc

MERITS User friendly Fast response, Error free input, Easy to clean Make computing easy powerful and fun Suited to novices It saves time rather than fumbling with a mouse and keyboard Compared to input devices such as a keyboard and mouse, touch-screen display is more user-friendly due to the characteristic of making the input on the screen. Touch screen gadgets usually have simple user interfaces, which are more intuitive. Touch screen devices have fewer buttons which means no more buttons falling off. Without a keypad or mouse attached, touch screen devices provide a much larger display. It also saves desk space since its screen acts as both input and output.

DEMERITS They are costly compared to alternative devices The screen gets filthy due to finger prints One is required to have close contact with the screen Finger stress and fatigue : stress on human fingers when used for more than a few minutes at a time Touch screen means screen can't be read too well in direct sunlight User is required to sit quite close to the screen in comparison to keyboard Touch screens are not super precise because it cannot immediately and accurately detect the position of a touch., or by reducing skin contact by using a fingernail or stylus.

CONCLUSION Today touch screen technology is globally. Designers are trying to use touch screen to simplify input commands. In the future there will be no need for mouse and keyboard as they will be replaced by touchscreen.   Touch screen is an input device that permits the user to operate a device simply by touching the display screen which has a sensitive glass overlay placed on it and we can give the desired input by touching on it. Touch screens are fast becoming the wave of the future, and the momentum doesn’t show any signs of slowing down. As software engineers continue to push for the most user-friendly interfaces, your fingers are quickly becoming the most powerful tools around you.
