St Philip Howard Catholic High School AS Biology bridging work 2016 WHY DO BRIDGING WORK? Because we want you to be really successful and what it takes to be successful at GCSE is different from being successful at A level. Although you have fewer subjects, there are different skills required and the volume of work is greater because the depth and detail is more demanding.

Completing the work The bridging work MUST be completed for biology by the time you start your course. Your work will be assessed in September. The aims are for you to understand if you like the course and for you to be ready to start learning at post-16 level.

PROTEINS-STRUCTURE and SYNTHESIS From your GCSE course you will have learned that proteins are vital chemicals found in all living organisms. They play a variety of roles ranging from enzymes like catalase, used to break down harmful hydrogen peroxide, to antibodies which is made by B –cells and helps to recognise foreign bodies such as viruses and bacteria. Other proteins are structural, forming important parts of the body such as elastin, collagen, keratin etc. You may also remember how proteins are made in cells, although the description at GCSE is fairly brief.

Task 1 –Protein structure Find and draw a labelled, generalised structure of an amino acid:

Task 2 -Note taking (hand-written) Give a brief general, comparative description of the primary, secondary, tertiary and quaternary structure of a protein. [Include terms such as:- polypeptide chains; alpha helices; beta pleated sheets; hydrogen bonds; ionic bonds; disulphide bonds; hydrophobic R-groups; Hydrophilic R-groups; conjugated proteins]
