Year 10 Subject Selection – Advanced Mathematics

Course Description Advanced Mathematics is an extended course in Year 10 Maths, designed to prepare students for VCE Mathematical Methods and Specialist Mathematics. Over the two semesters, students work in the following Strands and Areas of Study: Number and Algebra Number: Introduction to irrational numbers and operating with surds, significant figures, scientific notation, indices and logarithms. Algebra: Linear and Quadratic expansions, factorisation, equation solving, Cartesian Plane graphing, and real life modelling. Measurement and Geometry Measurement: 3-dimensional work involving surface area, volume of prisms, tapering solids, spheres, compound solids and Pythagoras’ Theorem; introduction to the Unit Circle in Trigonometry. Geometry: Circle theorems, deductive proof, congruency and similarity. Statistics and Probability Statistics: Real life data analysis utilising ICT capabilities. Probability: A study to underpin the new VCE Study Designs 2016 – 2018.

Why study this subject? Advanced Mathematics is intended for students who have found Year 9 Maths quite straightforward, and who intend to keep open the option of completing Mathematical Methods and Specialist Mathematics in Years 11 and 12. Following this pathway keeps open all tertiary and career options in relation to Mathematics. This pathway allows for the ATAR scale-up potential of Specialist Mathematics in Year 12. Access to this pathway is subject to recommendation by your Year 9 Maths teacher.

Subject pathway Year 9 Year 10 Year 11 Year 12 Standard Maths General Please note: Specialist Maths 1-2 must be taken alongside Maths Methods 1-2, so is not available on its own. Extra activities Weekly support is available every Monday after school at Maths Aid in Room MA4, 3.30 – 4.30pm, where Maths Learning Area staff are on hand to assist students as they work through their Maths coursework/homework. (A late bus in to Bairnsdale is available.) Advanced Mathematics students are strongly encouraged to develop their problem-solving skills through participation in the annual Maths Competitions offered at Nagle College
