What is Assessment? Collecting evidence to help determine to what degree a program is meeting its stated goals. The collected evidence provides the basis for deciding what (if any) improvements are warranted.

Why do Assessment? Better serve our students Academic excellence Obtain reliable information Decision-making: budget, personnel, curriculum, etc. Preparation level Meet expectations Constituency Accreditation CBU

What is the Goal of Assessment? Demonstrating educational effectiveness Done by collecting evidence How do we know we are doing what we say we are doing? Claim: We offer a quality product that is worth what we are charging How do we know this is true? How can we show others that this is true?

Evaluation: The Next Step Evaluation seeks to make judgments and decisions, based on the assessment data, about the appropriate course of action Continue on as is Make indicated adjustments Add a needed element

Who is Responsible? The people who are directly responsible for the success of the program Deans and Associate/Assistant Deans Department Chair or Program Director Assessment Coordinator Faculty/Staff in program

Assessment Methods Must be appropriate to the academic discipline Quantitative: rubrics, grad school acceptance rates, # of publications, etc. Qualitative: e-mails, pictures, comment cards, etc. There are many different strategies and methods Select at least one option for each outcome to be measured

The Assessment Process at CBU CBU Mission, Priorities and USO’s College, Department, program Mission SLO’s and “Curriculum Map” Overall Assessment Plan Annual Implementation Plan As Needed CBU Program Reviews WASC Self Studies Professional Accreditation Reports Grant Requests ASSESS Collect data (evidence) Analyze the data Make decisions (evaluate) Make any needed changes Yearly Report CBU - OIRPA

CBU Mission and Priorities California Baptist University believes each person has been created for a purpose. CBU helps students understand and engage this purpose by providing a Christ-centered educational experience that integrates academics with spiritual and social development opportunities. Graduates are challenged to become individuals whose skills, integrity and sense of purpose glorify God and distinguish them in the workplace and in the world.

Planning Documents Overall Plan Annual Plan

Yearly Report (YReport) Include evidence to support claims Rubric data Rubrics Include commentary to explain data Where are the areas of strength? Where are the opportunities for growth? What are the plans for improvement? What does the data not show?

Basic Assessment Steps State your program’s mission Write university, program, and student learning outcomes Include faith integration “Map” your outcomes Explore and select assessment methods Develop an OPlan Each year write an APlan Collect and analyze data (evidence) Use data to make identified adjustments Report assessment actions and results (Yearly Report) Implement improvements

Realistic and Manageable Assessment must be realistic and manageable It is not necessary or possible to assess everything every year Accumulate evidence over time Build a “weight” of evidence Leads to “Program Review”

CBU What is Program Review? A periodic, detailed, and documented analysis of an entire program and all of its academic components A comprehensive review of all the previous years’ assessment A comparative curriculum review A comparative “industry standards” review A review of “capacity” data A visit and review done by an expert in the field A final report that addresses the quality and efficacy of the program based on the previous information CBU - OIRPA

Program Review Elements CBU Program Review Elements Mission Student and Constituent Feedback Curriculum Faith Integration Program Viability and Sustainability Faculty Information Outside Reviewer Report Student Information Summary and Conclusions Tied to external accrediting body, if applicable.

Program Review Results CBU Program Review Results Program Review is designed to systematically identify a program’s strengths and weaknesses. The results are used to make: Budget requests for additional faculty Budget requests for additional physical resources Curricular adjustments Teaching/learning adjustments Decisions about adding program need
