Diversity and Climate Certificate About the (proposed) Diversity and Climate Professional Development Certificate: Polygon Engineering Student Council offers all College of Engineering students the opportunity to earn the Diversity and Climate Certificate. The Certificate recognizes students who are active in extracurricular learning about issues concerning diversity and climate. The Certificate is offered by Polygon Engineering Student Council, and can be earned by students’ involvement with diversity and climate events across the UW-Madison campus, including those hosted by Polygon.

Proposal for the Certificate Need to present to Dean Cramer, Desiree Alva (Diversity Affairs Office), and possibly other staff in the CoE Needs to include objectives and requirements to earn the certificate, and possibly other details

Objectives (Draft) 1. Students are exposed to the industry perspective to situations in diversity and climate 2. Students who earn the D&C certificate collaborate in discussions on how to constructively handle sensitive diversity issues. 3. Students who have earned the certificate have shown initiative and willingness to learn about complex issues that are challenging to confront within a workplace setting. 4. Students have been exposed to diversity and climate concepts through a variety of mediums. (i.e. film, art, articles) 5. Students are fostered to be able to handle a multitude of situations pertaining to sensitive diversity concerns in order to create a positive environment. 6. Students demonstrate their ability to apply what they learn through expressive opportunities. (i.e. Presentation dinner; recruitment to the program)

Requirements (Draft) 1. Program participants must attend fifteen events within the maximum time period to earn the certificate. 2. Participants must attend eight speaker events within the maximum time period, with at least one per semester. 3. Participants must attend one formal dinner or equivalent event within the time limit to earn the certificate. 4. Industry Requirement: four of the seminars attended (of the above requirement of eight seminars) must be hosted/lectured by an industry professional. 5. Participants may choose which minor events to attend for the remaining six events. For example, creative events, small group events, etc.) 6. [Applicable to this requirements section is the following clause from the bylaws] The Diversity and Climate committee, under the leadership of the Diversity and Climate Chair through Polygon Engineering Student Council, will have the authority to determine which events unassociated with the committee will count as credit toward the certificate.
