Philippians For Times Like These #11 – Salvation Work Out Philippians 2:12-13

Time For after holiday workout? Physical body workouts can be beneficial. Salvation workouts are vital to our eternal life. What’s involved in a spiritual workout?

Philippians 2:12-13 So then, my beloved, just as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your salvation with fear and trembling; for it is God who is at work in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure.

The Exercise Of Obedience Obedience is to be constant – not just when others are looking. (2:12) John 3:36 --He who believes in the Son has eternal life; but he who does not obey the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.”

Obedience necessary for holiness Acts 5:29 -- But Peter and the apostles answered, “We must obey God rather than men.

Dead to sin, alive to god Romans 6:11-13 -- Even so consider yourselves to be dead to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus. Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its lusts, and do not go on presenting the members of your body to sin as instruments of unrighteousness; but present yourselves to God as those alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God.

Fear and Trembling We are called to work out our salvation with fear and trembling. As it was with Moses: Hebrews 12:21 – “And so terrible was the sight, that Moses said, ‘I am full of fear and trembling.’”

Proper Fear Of God Hebrews 10:31 – “It is a terrifying thing to fall into the hands of the living God.” Romans 3:10, 18 – “As it is written, ‘There is none righteous, not even one….There is no fear of God before their eyes.’”

Angels preach of proper fear Revelation 14:6-7 -- And I saw another angel flying in midheaven, having an eternal gospel to preach to those who live on the earth, and to every nation and tribe and tongue and people; and he said with a loud voice, “Fear God, and give Him glory, because the hour of His judgment has come; worship Him who made the heaven and the earth and sea and springs of waters.”

To will and to work Philippians 2:13 – for it is God who is at work in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure.” Philippians 1:6 – “For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus.”

Through His Word 1 Thessalonians 2:13 -- For this reason we also constantly thank God that when you received the word of God which you heard from us, you accepted it not as the word of men, but for what it really is, the word of God, which also performs its work in you who believe.

Through His Spirit 1 Corinthians 12:4,11 -- Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit…But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually just as He wills.

1 Thessalonians 5:19 “Do not quench the Spirit….”

To accomplish His WIll 1 Thessalonians 4:3-5 -- For this is the will of God, your sanctification; that is, that you abstain from sexual immorality; that each of you know how to possess his own vessel in sanctification and honor, not in lustful passion, like the Gentiles who do not know God….

For As Long As We Live 2 John 1:8 -- Watch yourselves, that you do not lose what we have accomplished, but that you may receive a full reward.
