Configuring and Activating a Brick Configuration Example Alcatel-Lucent Security Products Configuration Example Series

Configuring and Activating a Brick Once you have Loaded ALSMS, from the start menu open the ALSMS Navigator From the menu on the left, click on Bricks. Right Click and select “New Brick” In this window you need to fill in your: Brick Name- This is mandatory and can contain any name with up to 80 alpha-numeric characters. Create a naming convention for yourself so that it doesn’t get confusing when you have hundreds of Bricks. Brick IP Address and Mask- Is mandatory, even if the Brick will be operating in layer 2. The ALSMS address should be filled in for you. Check it. Gateway IP address. This would be the address of the nearest router to a Brick. If the Brick is going to a remote site. If not leave this blank. Also select the appropriate Brick Type with the model that you are using. See example screen on the following page.

Configuring and Activating a Brick The next thing that you want to do is add a firewall rule-set to one of your physical interfaces. The ALSMS has many pre-configured rule-sets that you can use. You can also modify or add to these rule-sets to customize them for your network. The Administrative-Zone rule-set is configured to; secure your ALSMS and at the same time allow communications between the Bricks and the ALSMS. You should apply the Administrative-Zone to each Brick. On the Bricks any rule-set can go on any interface. If you are configuring the Brick that will be at the site with the ALSMS put Administrative-Zone on the physical interface that the ALSMS will physically be connected to. If you are configuring a remote Brick you can put it on any interface. Note: It’s strongly recommended to make sure Administrative-Zone is on each Brick to ensure that you won’t lock ALSMS communications out of that Brick by applying other rule-sets to all of the interfaces.

Configuring and Activating a Brick Click on the Policy Assignment Tab Double click on the interface where you want Administrative-Zone

Securing the Administrative Zone Select the pull-down menu in Zone Ruleset and select administrativezone. Click Static. Click OK Click File>Save

Configuring a Brick There are several ways to do the initial boot of a Brick. You can do it with a Flash Drive, Floppy drive, FTP or serial port. The next two slides will show you how to boot the Brick with a flash drive and a floppy drive. As you can imagine the flash drive method is the more efficient method. If you have a flash drive that is bootable follow the instructions on the next slide. If you don’t but you do have a floppy drive follow the instructions on the following slide for the “Floppy Drive Method”. You do not need to do both!

Configuring a Brick Flash Drive Method Optionally you can connect a monitor up to the Brick to watch this process. Next insert your flash drive in the USB port of the ALSMS server. From the menu at the top of the screen select: Brick_Utilities>Make Floppy Package Choose option two: Make USB flash drive on ALSMS host. Click OK. Once the flash drive is done, double click on the Safely Remove Hardware icon at the bottom right of your screen Insert the flash drive in the USB port of the Brick and reboot the Brick. You will hear a single beep notifying you that the process has started and then three beeps notifying you when the process is complete. Remove the flash drive from the USB port on the Brick and reboot the Brick. If you have completed this process you can skip the next slide.

Configuring a Brick Floppy Drive Method Optionally you can connect a monitor up to the Brick to watch this process. Next put a diskette in the floppy drive of the ALSMS server. From the menu at the top of the screen select: Brick_Utilities>Make Floppy Package Choose option one: Make floppy using floppy drive on ALSMS host. Click OK. Once the floppy is done, put it in the floppy drive on your Brick and reboot the Brick. This process will take a few minutes. You will hear a single beep notifying you that the process has started and then three beeps notifying you when the process is complete. Remove the floppy from the drive and reboot the Brick.

Configuring a Brick Check to see that the Brick and the ALSMS are connected. From the navigator screen pick: Monitor>Brick_Status>All Bricks Confirm that your Brick State is UP with a green check mark. (Note: it will take a minute for the Brick to start communicating with the ALSMS). Note that you can configure as many Bricks as your ALSMS license allows up to 1000 Bricks per ALSMS. See manual if you are configuring redundant ALSMS servers or redundant Bricks. The installation process is slightly different in those cases. Assuming that your Brick is up and you see a green checkmark you are done with this process. Congratulations.

Configuring and Activating a Brick For more detailed information on configuring a Brick see the section on Configuring and Activating a Brick in the ALSMS Administration Guide Once the ALSMS is installed and running you can access the manuals by clicking- Help>On Line Product Manuals>(choose manual)
