Ixworth’s History! Created by Lily Mayhew!

Ixworth in 1625 Lincolne Lane is now Crown Lane! The earliest known map of Ixworth was created in 1625 to show the land holdings of the Lord of the Manor John Carill Esq. That map was then copied by hand in 1834. The 1834 version was deteriorating when, in the 1970s, a local photographer recorded it. That record, in the form of a pair of large black-and-white prints is available to see at the Suffolk Record Office in Bury St Edmunds (reference no 1991). The quality of the print is not enough to be able to read the smallest details (mostly the names of individual tenants on the land) but it still gives a fascinating insight into early Ixworth. A sketch of the central part of the village as seen in 1625 is reproduced here. The main features of the village are still clear to see (the main streets, Dairy Farm, the Abbey, Cross House etc.) but there are changes and intriguing features.

The Ixworth Chicken! The Ixworth Chicken! The Ixworth was created in 1932 by Reginald Appleyard, who also created the Silver Appleyard Duck, at his poultry farm in the village of Ixworth in Suffolk. The Ixworth Chicken! Primary use: dual-purpose meat/eggs Egg production (annual): 270 Egg size: Medium Temperament: Alert, Active Recognized variety: Pure white Egg colour: Tinted

Ixworth’s History What it was? Ixworth was settled in Roman times and was the site of a 1st-century AD Roman fort. The fort is believed to have been built as a response to Boudicca's revolt and appears to have been in use only until the end of the 1st century. The site measures 193 metres (633 ft) by 205 metres (673 ft) and was surrounded by three ditches.

Old Homes! Ixworth House This is Ixworth house, its been in Ixworth over 100 years! Its now a bed and breakfast it was built in 1908, it was made for former Dr Gelston, the village doctor. Ixworth House is a magnificent Edwardian property retaining and displaying a wealth of exceptional and original features associated with a home of the early 20th century.
