Chapter 4 Rocks Mr. Lee Rock Cycle Song

Rocks and Minerals are both solids.

Rocks and minerals are both natural They are not man made

Rocks and minerals both make up soil.

Minerals are made of elements

Rocks are made of minerals.

Minerals are Inorganic Rocks are inorganic, but may contain some organic matter.

Minerals can be identified by physical and chemical tests.

Minerals are grouped by composition Rocks are grouped by formation Rock groups: Metamorphic Igneous Sedimentary Rock Cycle video

Crystals may be present in minerals and rocks.

Rocks are mixtures of minerals, rock fragments, volcanic glass, organic matter, or other natural materials.

Why do we study rocks? 1. Give us clues to what the earth was like millions of years ago. Location of ancient lakes, oceans, mountain ranges.

2. Help us find natural resources Gold, coal, diamonds

3. Help us learn what life was like in the past. fossils

The Rock Cycle The rock cycle is a model showing how the 3 groups/families of rocks form and reform. Shows how rocks can change into each other as conditions around them change.

The 3 groups/families of rocks in the rock cycle are: A. Sedimentary rock: can be changed by heat and pressure into metamorphic rock.

B. Metamorphic rock: can melt and cool to form igneous rock.

C. Igneous rock: can be broken into fragments that may later form sedimentary rock.

James Hutton is responsible for the discovery of the rock cycle.

The rock cycle demonstrates conservation of matter: it never destroys elements of rocks but merely redistributes them.
