London RCE History Strengths of our region Regional Key issues Chair of London RCE Prof Ros Wade Lynn Vickery as RCE co-ordinator History In June 2009, London became the first capital city in Europe to become an RCE. We learn from others and offer expertise on a range of ESD approaches developed by the LRCE partners and stakeholders for the benefit of Londoners and other places that experience the particular challenges that living in a global city brings. London has the people, the ideas and the incentives to address this and the London RCE is a vehicle to help London capture and develop new and existing expertise in ESD. Strengths of our region Wealth of experience and knowledge from a diversity of backgrounds, cultures, ethnicities London as the centre for national NGOS and businesses Regional Key issues Growing inequality in terms of; Income Housing air quality employment access to green space London RCE goals and aims TRANSFORM education by developing the capacity of Londoners to learn together Make London a more SUSTAINABLE and an INCLUSIVE place to live, work and play PROVIDE a forum for dialogue and action to empower communities to live out sustainability principles BUILD on the diversity of London to help shape global excellence in ESD through innovation in learning LEARN from the experience of other RCEs in the Global Learning Network ADD VALUE to existing RCE networks and initiatives in London by developing, sharing and applying effective expertise Our ESD activities and achievements in the PAST 2 years ESD training and MSc Education for Sustainability distance learning courses at London Southbank University (www.lsbu.ac.uk/efs) London Olympic project – building networks for sustainability organisations around the Olympic park Embedding ESD across the HE curriculum – UK wide Conferences 2013 and 2014 Valuing displaced voices – 2015 Panel and discussion forum: Refugee learning journeys Promoting ethical fashion- 2016 The Fashion Revolution – remembering Rana Plaza and beyond ESD - Linking politics, education and learning, book produced and on going series of events bringing together policy makers, educationalists and the wider community Impact and Outcomes Over 80 students on post graduate programme on education for sustainability 25 DfID funded scholarships awarded for African and Caribbean scholars Over 160participants at ESD conferences from over 20 universities and college 40 curriculum projects presented and best practice shared UK and international dissemination through a special edition of Local Economy journal on ESD Over 150 participants at 3 seminars and discussion panels on politics, education and learning 50 participants at Refugee voices event – links made with local refugee support groups Links to SDGs / GAP and plans for NEXT two years Awareness raising programme on issues facing refugees and asylum seekers where we are seeking partners for collaboration Building support for transition town movements where we are seeking partners for collaboration Advocacy and engagement with policy makers and politicians
