History of mobile phones

Parts The very first models (1983-1994) The „Push button era“ (1994- 2002+) „Smartphones“ (1993-2007+) The „Iphone era“ (2007+) Present (there are overlaps)

The very first models (1983-1994) A Motorola DynaTAC 8000X (First commercially available mobile phone from 1984) Several prototypes were made between 1973 and 1983 Weight was about 1kg, height about 25cm Duration of first call was 13 minutes

1989 MOTOROLA MICROTAC 9800X The First truly portable smartphone Previously phones were too large to fit them into pocket

1992 - Nokia NOKIA 1011 First Nokia's mobilephone This was the first mass-produced GSM phone At that time the device cost about 2500 DM (1800E) Weight was about 460g Dimensions 195 x 60 x 45mm

The „Push button era “ (1994- 2002+) In this era, there were a many companies producing mobile phones Every mobile phone had its own design (colour, shape, construction) Mobile phones started to be affordable for „everyone“ By the late 1990s, mobile devices were fast becoming the norm First mobile phones with internet acces were developed in this era

It was the golden age of European manufacturers, contest between Nokia (Finland), Alcatel (France), Philips (Netherlands), Ericsson (Sweden) or Siemens (Germany) USA was reprezented by Motorola

Nokia This Finnish company was one of the biggest and the most advanced mobilephone companies in this era During this era Nokia had greatest financial incomes High build quality of devices High number of sold devices

The most popular devices 1994 – Nokia 2110 First model with famous „Nokia tune“ - wich comes from a song Gran Vals by Francisco Tárrega (1992)

1997 -Nokia 6110 Features: Three games: Memory, Snake, Logic Calculator, clock and calendar Currency converter Works as a pager Profile settings 4 colour

2000 -Nokia 3310 The most widespread mobile phone all around the World Also today we can see this model in use relatively low price, good battery life, durability, and compact for its time Legend between mobile phones

These phones were an example of the most iconic devices Many more devices from this era and this brand are still in use today. There were newer push button devices made by Nokia in later years.

Alcatel French company Most stread in European market Famous for low-end and low-cost mobilephones Introduced joystick middle button

Siemens German company producing electronical devices Also one of the most inovative producer in this era Brought to tha market number of leading innovations

1997 – Siemens S6 Very thin mobilephone, with outstanding design, awarded multiple times Weight was only 165 gram

1997 - Siemens S10 World first mobile phone with multiple color display

2001 – Siemes S45 Phone suitable for managers Supporting GPRS data transmission Costed around 13 000 CZK

Around 2002 there was a massive growth of Asian Companies Sony marged with Erricsson Alcatel was pushed out the market by Samsung

„Smartphones“ (1993-2007+) Smarphones are mobilephones with more functions, for example, better connectivity to the internet, better calendar application, diary etc Were designed for bussinesmen Originated from PDAs which came upon market in year 1993 And thanks to more complex OS you can implement applications you need There were 3 main operating systems – Windows mobile, PalmOS, Symbian

1999 Nokia 9000 Communicator

Those devices were very expensive, but around 2002 Nokia came with their bussines models runnig on Symbian OS, which were less expensive, smaller and support all important funcions for managers Those devices became popular also for common people

Nokia devices with Symbian Those devices changed user requirements for mobiles and became very popular Nokia was succesful and earned a lot of money Very famous and well known was their „N series“ multimedial smartphones and „E series“ for bussines

First smartphone with Symbian OS 2002 Nokia 7650 CPU 104Mhz 4 MB RAM 16 MB flash memory

Windows mobile devices There were many companies using WM For example HTC, HP, Acer, Asus It was golden era for those companies …..But everything once ends

The „Iphone era“ (2007+) Iphone was released in 2007 and it was a revolution in smartphone technologies Until then smartphones and pda were operated primarily using stylus, but iphone could have been operated using the tips of fingers This device was running on iOS CEO of Microsoft reprobated Apple for such a risky step, becouse it was expensive and impractical

Instead Iphone experienced boom in sales and media exposure Became best selling devices all the time Wich caused eventual financial problems for other brands that didnt react well to the changes of market

Other companies changed accordingly to the demand of the market Google their own operating system, wich other brands started using own devices

Android OS First device running on this OS was made by HTC It was HTC Dream, with sliding-out keyboard HTC Dream started new Android era Then Samsung became with their Galaxy S series, which was fair competitor for Iphone Galaxy S series became popular amoung many smartphone users

Windows Phone Reaction to Iphone from the side of Microsoft was Windows Phone OS Nokia was interested and switched to Windows Phone, becouse Symbian was an outdated platform Then Nokia was bought out by Microsoft (Lumia) But It turted out to be their finnal mistake and Nokia became bankrupt

Present In recent years smartphone market dramaticaly changed thanks to new comeptitors from China though Samsung and Apple still remains on the top When it comes to operating system market is dominated solely by Android and iOS
