How did this story survive? Stories about King Gilgamesh were handed down by word of mouth for hundreds of years By 21st Century BC, the tale was written down When Babylonians conquered Sumerians, they inherited cultural traditions A Babylonian author created the start of the epic we have today Others writers modified the story, ultimately giving us the central theme: the search for immortality
Survival continued . . . After the fall of Babylonia, the story was lost; however, in 1880’s, archaeologists excavating Ashurbanipal’s (last king of Neo-Assyrian Empire) library found the poem on clay tablets in cuneiform (an early script)
The Story: Gilgamesh is an arrogant king of Uruk, an ancient Sumerian city Gods and goddesses frequently intervene in his life to provide challenges and tests Goddess Aruru creates Endiku for this reason; providing him a challenge and friend Gilgamesh undertakes other journeys in search of everlasting life; learning about the cycle of life
