Task 1. You are going to read the text aloud. You have 1 Task 1. You are going to read the text aloud. You have 1.5 minutes to read the text silently, and then be ready to read it aloud. Remember that you will not have more than 2 minutes for reading aloud. The English language is spoken today in parts of Europe, The Americas, Asia, Africa, Australia, New Zealand, and in some islands of the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific Oceans. It is spoken as a first language by about 400 million people. It is also used as a second language by about the same number of people, and as a foreign language by millions more. English is probably used in some way by about a quarter of all people in the world. Because so many people, in so many places, speak or use English it is often called a ‘world language’. English is also used for many different kinds of international communication. Politics and business are often carried out in English. Most medical and scientific studies are written in English. English is the language of much of the world’s pop music and films. On the Internet and in the computer industry English is used much more than other languages.
