THE ADVANCED LEADERSHIP INITIATIVE Promoting and Developing African American Executives in the Greater Pittsburgh Region

But all sectors have not prospered equally. Pittsburgh has rebounded from industrial decline to become one of the most livable cities in America. But all sectors have not prospered equally.

24% AFRICAN AMERICAN 24% in city, 13% in region,

<0.1% EXECUTIVE LEADERSHIP limited and significantly disproportionate to our population.

Is a key to social and economic advancement DIVERSITY Is a key to social and economic advancement

THE NEED A pipeline of African American talent prepared for the challenges and responsibilities of executive leadership Successful companies create opportunities for high potentials— exposing them to leadership roles, supporting through mentorship, and giving them freedom to grow (and to fail and rebound). However, these efforts have typically not been extended to African Americans in the same way. When African Americans hit the top of their departments or areas of technical expertise, they are often forced to leave their companies, and often the region, to gain new experiences required for professional growth.

MAIN TITLE TALI HISTORY Through community collaboration, a model was developed to address the need in Pittsburgh. Build skill, obtain tools, and develop the understanding needed to ascend to the highest level through a world-class executive education experience. Address the unique challenges faced by African American leaders in the workplace Partner with committed corporate and community partners to support adoption MAIN TITLE

VISION Dramatically improve the regional presence of African Americans in executive corporate and nonprofit leadership roles, helping to create a more diverse, inclusive and prosperous community.

MISSION Build a continuous pipeline of African American leaders positioned to add significant value to their organizations and the community through participation in world class leadership development uniquely designed to give African Americans the tools, exposure and training necessary to maximize success in the Greater Pittsburgh region.

World-Class Academics MODEL FOR SUCCESS World-Class Academics Community Advisors Corporate Partners

MAIN TITLE Proven track record merging academic excellence with practical business experience to positively impact management development and corporate bottom line.

Advanced Leadership Academy

360 DEGREE DEVELOPMENT Research-Driven Curriculum Executive Coaching Professional Sponsorship

RESEARCH-DRIVEN CURRICULUM Research points to specific areas of skill development required for successful leadership. African American leaders face additional challenges on the road to the top. Top CMU instructors will enable Academy participants to: Master critical skills required of an executive Directly apply skills unique to the African American experience Eight 2-day Modules Strategic Leadership Change Management Operational Excellence Collaboration & Partnerships People Leadership Financial Management Governance & Civic Leadership Executive Presence

EXECUTIVE COACHING One-on-one Executive Coaching ensures direct translation of classroom instruction to practical implementation in the workplace – from Day 1. Personal, executive coach for 8 months 360-degree assessment Professional goal setting Accountability Direct application of skill after each module

PROFESSIONAL SPONSORSHIP Successful executives credit the valuable support of professional sponsors in their success. African Americans are less likely to be supported by this dedicated advocate. Creating these relationships is critical to success: Engage executives to serve as professional sponsors Sponsor provides introductions to other leaders, ensuring that participants develop their own professional network Sponsors help participants identify a long-term sponsor from within their own organization or industry Mentor vs. Sponsor MENTORS offer advice and guidance to support desired career goals SPONSORS hold influential position in the organization and openly advocate on behalf of the person

WHO SHOULD ATTEND? 20 participants selected annually Requirements Undergraduate degree at a minimum, advanced degree preferred Currently employed in a professional role with at least 5 years of experience Academic and professional experience which allows the participant to take full advantage of the Academy experience Ability to fully and actively participate in the entire 8 month program 20 participants selected annually African Americans currently living in the Pittsburgh area employed in professional and leadership roles Candidates with career goals that lead them into executive positions within their organization, or to other companies and nonprofits in the region

ADVISORY COUNCIL Prominent executives and key regional stakeholders will ensure that the program remains current in its content, is focused on outcomes, and is successfully addressing the unique African American lens of the program and its impact in Pittsburgh.

WE NEED YOU Support from Pittsburgh’s corporate and community stakeholders will make this a reality
