KEY STAGE 1 SATS INFORMATION EVENING 1st February 2017

Objectives for the evening For parents to gain an understanding of the processes of SATS in Year 2 To have a look at some examples the type of questions your children will be expected to answer To have the opportunity to ask questions

SATS Statutory Assessment Tests. Why do we do them?

SATs 2017 - What’s different? In 2014/15 a new national curriculum framework was introduced by the government for Years 1, 3, 4 and 5 (Years 2 and 6 (due to statutory testing) continued to study the previous curriculum for one further year) In 2015/16 children in all years at Key Stage 1 and 2 were expected to study, and be assessed on, the new national curriculum KS1 (Year 2) and KS2 SATs (Year 6) now reflect the new curriculum and your children are the second cohort to receive the new tests and the new style of reporting results

SATs 2017 - What’s different? The new curriculum is more rigorous and sets high expectations which all schools have had to work hard to meet since the introduction of the new curriculum ‘Old’ national curriculum levels (e.g. Level 1, 2, 3) have now been abolished Test scores are now reported as a ‘raw score’ and a ‘scaled score’ Tests must be completed by all Year 2 children in the UK during May 2017

Scores A ‘scaled score’ of 100 will always represent the ‘expected national standard’ Each pupil’s raw test score will therefore be converted into a score on the scale, either at, above or below 100. The scale will have a lower end point somewhere below 100 and an upper end point above 100 A child who achieves the ‘national standard’ (a scaled score of 100) will be judged to have demonstrated sufficient knowledge in the areas assessed by the tests Marking guidance for KS1 tests will include conversion tables. Teachers will use these to translate pupil’s raw scores into scaled scores to see whether each pupil has met the national standard. Teachers will use the scaled scores to inform their teacher assessment judgements

Scores In July 2017, each pupil will receive: A teacher assessment for each tested subject – this will use the scores along with evidence seen within the classroom throughout the year Confirmation of whether or not they attained the national standard in each of the test papers Below the expected standard At the expected standard Exceeding the expected standard

Tests Statutory tests will be administered in the following subjects: Reading Grammar, Punctuation & Spelling Mathematics There is no test for Writing – this will be ‘Teacher Assessed’ internally These tests will inform teacher assessments of the children’s ability

Writing Children have already started compiling a selection of independent writing throughout Year 2 which will be assessed and moderated by the Year 2 teachers At the end of the year, a selection of schools in Milton Keynes will be EXTERNALLY MODERATED to ensure equality throughout As a school, we regularly moderate with other local schools to secure our judgements

How we are preparing and supporting your children During lessons, we are exposing your children continually to the format of the different test papers so nothing will be a surprise or cause the children to feel stress or pressure In late February and late April, your children will be completing practice papers in small groups as a way of supporting gap filling We will decide the most suitable time during the test period for your child to complete the different test papers – there will be no timetable of tests! Some children who we believe have the opportunity to attain an exceeding level will begin receiving homework tasks which will support specific areas of the curriculum During the assessment period, we will be making sure the children are treated to a variety of fun learning activities

How you can help your children First and foremost, support and reassure your child about school. Remind them that they should always just try their best. Praise and encourage wherever possible! Ensure your child has the best possible attendance at school Support your child with any homework tasks. Reading, spelling and arithmetic (e.g. times tables) are always good to practise also! Make sure your child has a good sleep and healthy breakfast every morning!

Higher Attaining Pupils Previous Key Stage 2 tests were aimed at children achieving Levels 3-5 (with a national expectation to reach at least Level 4) In the past, additional Level 6 tests were produced for children who demonstrated higher than expected attainment, above Level 5 As of last year, there won’t be any separate tests for the most able children. Instead, each test will have scope for higher attaining pupils to show their strengths through their raw score and eventual scaled score

Tests Statutory tests will be administered in the following subjects: Reading (60 minutes) Spelling (approximately 15 minutes) Punctuation, Vocabulary and Grammar (45 minutes) Mathematics - Paper 1: Arithmetic (30 minutes) - Paper 2: Reasoning (40 minutes) - Paper 3: Reasoning (40 minutes)

Tests In addition, some schools will be required to take part in Science testing, consisting of three tests in Biology, Physics and Chemistry. Not all schools will take part in this sampling, which takes place on a later date All tests are externally marked Writing will be ‘Teacher Assessed’ internally, as in recent years
