Determining Your Rules For the Road

“Rules are for the obedience of fools and the guidance of wise men.” - Douglas Bader

An Example of Rules from the Bible 1. Have no other gods. 2. Have no idols. 3. Honor God's name. 4. Honor the Sabbath day. 5. Honor your parents. 6. Do not murder. 7. Do not commit adultery. 8. Do not steal. 9. Do not perjure yourself. 10. Do not covet.

An Example of Rules from the DMV Respect the right-of-way of pedestrians. Always stop for any pedestrian crossing at corners or other crosswalks, even if the crosswalk is in the middle of the block, at corners with or without traffic lights, whether or not the crosswalks are marked by painted lines. Do not pass a vehicle that has stopped at a crosswalk. A pedestrian you cannot see may be crossing the street. Stop, then proceed when all pedestrians have crossed the street. Do not drive on a sidewalk, except to cross it to enter or exit a driveway or alley. When crossing, yield to all pedestrians. Do not stop in a crosswalk. You will place pedestrians in danger. Remember, if a pedestrian makes eye contact with you, he or she is ready to cross the street. Yield to the pedestrian. Allow older pedestrians, disabled pedestrians and pedestrians with young children sufficient time to cross the street

Rules for Women Teachers in 1915 1. You will not marry during the term of your contract. 2. You are not to keep company with men. 3. You must be home between the hours of 8 PM and 6 AM unless at a school function. 4. You may not loiter downtown in any of the ice cream stores. 5. You may not travel beyond the city limits unless you have permission of the chairman of the chairman of the school board. 6. You may not ride in carriages or automobiles with any man except your father or brother. 7. You may not smoke cigarettes. 8. You may not dress in bright colors. 9. You may under no circumstances dye your hair. 10. You must wear at least 2 petticoats. 11. Your dresses may not be any shorter than 2 inches above the ankles. 12. To keep the classroom neat and clean you must sweep the floor once a day, scrub the floor with hot soapy water once a week, clean the blackboards once a day and start the fire at 7 AM to have the school warm by 8 AM when the scholars arrive.

Developing Your Own Rules for the Road Your rules should reflect your values and principles. In your notes, list at least five values and/or principles that are important to you. Examples: Honor, respect, loyalty, trust, honesty, integrity, kindness, compassion, commitment, hard work, patriotism, generosity, etc.
