Epidemiological Characteristics of Musculoskeletal Injuries in Thoroughbred Horse Racing Carolina Quintana MA, ATC, Jed Crots MS, ATC, Amanda Glueck PhD, John Abt PhD, Carl Mattacola, PhD, ATC, FNATA University of Kentucky, Lexington, KY

PURPOSE Professional Jockeys are elite level athletes participating in a sport that puts them at a particularly high risk for musculoskeletal injuries Very little is known about the nature and risk factors of these injuries Our aim was to report injuries sustained by jockeys participating in Thoroughbred Horse Racing in the United States

METHODS Design: Retrospective epidemiological study Setting: Racetracks across the United States Subjects: 1054 reported incidents (975 males and 64 females) Experience 11.0 ± 9.5 years Data Collection: Data were collected and entered in the Jockey Injury Database February 2012-September 2016 An incident report was completed if a jockey was physically removed from a horse during a race and/or sought medical attention for an injury Descriptive statistics were used to identify frequency and percentages of musculoskeletal injuries

RESULTS Location of Incident At the Start In the Gate Galloping Out 4.8% In the Gate Final Turn In the Stretch First Half of Race 3.0% 34.1% 16.5% 14.7% 24.3% Location of Incident

CONCLUSION The largest percentage of injuries occurred at the start of the race(34%) and in the stretch(24%) Fractures (23%) sprains/strains (24%) and concussions (10%) were the most prevalent injuries Over 80% of injuries to the jockeys occurred as a result of an injury during a fall
