PROPOSAL ON FORMING AN UNION FOR MIGRANT WORKERS UNION IN MALAYSIA FOLLOW UP WORK PLAN PROPOSAL ON FORMING AN UNION FOR MIGRANT WORKERS UNION IN MALAYSIA by Sarojini & Sivam

TIME FRAME The proposal had been sent to for Government approval 3 times but it was rejected. Next follow up target duration time is 2 Years (2017)

BACKGROUND & THE NEED FOR THE PROJECT Malaysia is largest receiving migrant worker in South East Asia. Most of the MW already form the Association. - Philipphines - Nepal - Vietnam MTUC had summited the proposal for the approval (2007 – 2014)

Support from ILO, ITUC, GUF’s, MEF Needs for the project Support from ILO, ITUC, GUF’s, MEF Voice from TU’s during ILO Conference in Geneva. Standard policy and SS for MW Proper Documentation (Agreement) Translation of the documents.

TARGET GROUP AND PARTIES INVOLVE Union Leaders (MTUC) All Sector’s MW Parties Relevant Government Bodies NGO’s Agencies Human recourse (MHR) Company Immigration

OBJECTIVE To Rectify on Convention To form a Union under one roof To handling and organise MW issues collectively. To have a proper data and statistic. To get them a better “life” To have better relationship with origin / sending country Platform to increase migrant workers participation in Union and activities. To Rectify on Convention

ACTIVITIES TO ACHIEVE THE OBJECTIVES Identifying and Training of Union leaders. Training for MW before their destination Training on Labour related laws and Union Rights Networking with local and sending country- civil society/ Trade Union partners. Collaboration with Labour Attaches of sending countries for effective case management Meeting with bar council for legal consultancies and other involve parties
