Flood Insurance Study FEMA issued a revised Flood Insurance Study and Flood Insurance Rate Map on 9/16/16 This is the only countywide study and map update for Prince George’s County to have occurred in 30-years. FEMA issued the previous FIS and FIRM for the County on June 18, 1987. Revised map reflects detailed topographic information, updated hydrologic (streamflow projections) and hydraulic (flow depth) analyses FIS and FIRM define areas at varying levels of risk for flooding Over 75 map panels have been produced to depict areas at various levels of flood risk Background information and technical data are provided in the 3-volume flood insurance study Insurance agents, lenders and others use the FIS and FIRM to determine flood insurance needs

Special Flood Hazard Area Special Flood Hazard Area (SFHA) is the area inundated by the 1% annual chance flood event SFHA defined along the Northwest Branch and Sligo Creek and certain areas behind levee systems SFHA are areas at high risk for flood inundation FEMA designated SFHA along NW Branch, Sligo Creek and areas behind the North Brentwood Levee System The September 16th FIRM shows that the SFHA increased in some areas and stayed about the same in other areas compared to the previously effective FIRM dated ______ in District 2. The SFHA is shown as the area in blue along the NW Branch and Sligo Creek and area in grey behind the North Brentwood Levee System The areas shown in green are areas that are at risk of flooding by a storm event having 0.2% percent chance of being equaled or exceeded in any given year The area shown in pink is an area protected from flooding by the levee system

Special Flood Hazard Area As a result of the Flood Insurance Study update: Properties were added to the SFHA Properties were removed from the SFHA For some properties, the map update had no effect In 2 particular areas in Council District 2, there is a significant change in the SFHA as shown on the September 16th FIRM compared with previously effective FIRM

Special Flood Hazard Area East of Sligo Parkway Width of SFHA significantly increased along Sligo Creek between the confluence with Northwest Branch and Riggs Road Area behind an existing embankment has been identified as an area at high risk for flooding Significant increase in SFHA width occurs east of Sligo Parkway

Special Flood Hazard Area Residual Flooding Behind Levee SFHA designated for certain properties behind the North Brentwood Levee System SFHA behind levee system based on residual flooding SFHA added behind the North Brentwood Levee System

Flood Insurance Forum More information and assistance will be provided at the conclusion of presentations Federal, State and County government representatives will be available following presentations to answer questions and assist you with determining flood risks for your property. You may visit the stations at the rear of the room to obtain this assistance after presentations Mr. Kevin Wagner, Natural Resources Planner, MDE, is next on the agenda. He will provide you with an overview of the National Flood Insurance Program which administers regulations governing FIS and FIRMs. The NFIP also enables property owners in participating communities (such as Prince George’s County) to purchase insurance protection against losses from flooding.
