3Rs Reduce, Reuse and Recycle Reduce the amount of the Earth's resources that we use. Reuse Don't just bin it, could someone else make use of it? Recycle Can the materials be made into something new?
YTV and Waste Treatment Centre YTV has responsibility of waste management in the Metropolitan area collect more than one million tons of waste per year Waste Treatment Centre Waste Treatment Centre is largest in the Nordic countries receives waste from five municipalities The total number of residents is over one million The total area of Waste Treatment Centre is approximately 190 hectares many different functions
How Waste Is Sorted? YTV collects next wastes separately: hazardous wastes (for example batteries) biowaste and compost paper paper and board based packages cardboard glass metals electrical goods and electronic scrap combustible waste construction waste large objects such as furniture clothes and old items mixed waste
Waste collection points numerous collection points for glass, batteries, metal, paper and hazardous waste three Sortti Recycling Stations collection vehicles Pick-up Sortti
Why to sort wastes? natural resources will be saved lowering amount of wastes lowering amount of energy needed climate protection no toxic substances to nature
Why to sort wastes - examples 1 recycled tin can would save enough energy to power a television for 3 hours. 1 recycled glass bottle would save enough energy to power a computer for 25 minutes. 1 recycled plastic bottle would save enough energy to power a 60-watt light bulb for 3 hours. 70% less energy is required to recycle paper compared with making it from raw materials.
What should I do with this waste? Glass new glass products & fibreglass Board based packages coreboard, package for biowaste, material for crafts Mobile phone raw materials Producer responsibility
Waste prevention at source Buy only what you need (borrow, rent, share). Buy products that can be reused. Buy products with little packaging. Reduce paper waste by cancelling unwanted mail. Think twice before you print.
