Energy Basics. Part 1: The Relationship Between Matter and Energy 1.Define matter and energy Matter is anything that occupies space and has mass. Energy.
Energy. Nature of Energy Energy is all around you. You hear energy as sound, you see energy as light, you can feel energy in wind. Living organisms need.
Forms of Energy. Energy Energy Energy- The ability to do work Energy- The ability to do work Work- A transfer of energy Work- A transfer of energy Work.
Sun Source of almost all the energy is the… Wood, coal, petroleum and natural gas come from the sun. The USA gets 90% of its energy from fossil fuel.
Energy and Matter. Energy Energy – the ability to do work or cause change. – Like matter, energy is never created or destroyed in chemical reactions.

Work and Energy. What is WORK? Work is equal to the amount of force it takes for an object to move a distance. Formula: Work = Force X Distance W = F.

WHAT IS ENERGY?

What is energy? Energy is the ability to do work or cause change. It can change the temperature, shape, speed, or direction of an object

There are two basic types… Potential energy is stored energy. Kinetic energy is energy in motion.

Potential vs. Kinetic Energy http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jnj8mc04r9E

Other forms of energy… Chemical – The energy in chemical bonds that hold atoms together. When chemical bonds are broken, chemical energy is released. All matter has chemical energy. When you digest the pizza you eat, the pizza gives your body energy.

Other forms of energy… Elastic – Energy that can be compressed or stretched.

Other forms of energy… Electromagnetic – energy of light and other forms of radiation (radio, UV, X-ray); it travels in waves. Thermal – Heat energy. The hotter the object, the faster its molecules are moving.

Other forms of energy… Electrical- The energy of moving electrons. Sound- energy that causes air and other molecules to vibrate in waves.

Find the forms of energy in this picture.

Find the forms of energy in this picture.

1st Law of Thermodynamics Physical principle that the total amount of energy in a system remains constant, although energy can be changed from one form to another or transferred from one object to another.

1st Law of Thermodynamics Energy cannot be created or destroyed, but it can be transferred and transformed.

Types of Energy http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i6e-KrNCe_E

Energy can be transferred and transformed!

Energy can be TRANSFORMED! Energy Transformation occurs when one form of energy is changed into another. Motion energy (Turbines are spinning!) Electrical Energy

Energy can be TRANSFORMED! Electromagnetic (Light and UV) Energy Electrical Energy

Another example… As water falls over a waterfall, its gravitational potential energy is first transformed into kinetic energy.

Energy can be TRANSFERRED! An energy transfer happens when the same form of energy is passes from one object to another. Motion Energy Motion Energy

Energy can be TRANSFERRED! Have you ever burned your mouth on sip of hot cocoa or tea? The thermal energy was transferred from the drink (hot) to your mouth (cold) by conduction. Ouch!

What’s the difference? Energy form stays the same. Motion  Motion Transfer Transformation Energy form stays the same. Motion  Motion Energy form changes Gravitational Potential  Motion
